attention to the marks of benevolent design discernible in the creation around us.

In making her selections, the Editor has, in some instances, considered it desirable to deviate from the original of the Author;-to simplify an expression, or omit a verse: and whilst she feels that an apology is due where the liberty has been taken, she hopes to be pardoned for this exercise of editorial discretion. Her only object in doing so was to render her collection in all respects suitable to those for whom it is intended; and it will be to her a source of sincere gratification should she find that her endeavours to inculcate the fundamental truths of Christianity, and to disseminate the seeds of genuine piety and virtue, have not been entirely without result.

Liverpool, 5th October, 1835.

A beautiful and solemn sight
Again the day returns of holy rest
Again we hear the sabbath bell
All human hearts are closely viewed
All the little flowers I see
Almighty Father! bounteous friend
Almighty Father! gracious Lord
Almighty Father! heavenly King
Almighty God! in humble prayer
Almighty God! 'tis by thy power
Almighty parent of our race
A minute, how soon it is flown
Another smiling day I see
As every day thy mercy spares
As now another day is gone.
As sets the glorious sun

A suppliant to your window comes

91

A wanderer came like a stricken deer

142

Behold around the Saviour's feet

Before I close my eyes in sleep

Behold the grass which clothes the plain

61

125

96

Behold the lily's silken vest

122

Come let us join our God to praise

36

Come sound his praise abroad

58

Come to the sunset tree

[blocks in formation]

HYMN.

Great God of love, to thee we owe

Happy the man whose hopes rely

Hark! for the storm is abroad, my child

Hark, hark, the sabbath bells

Hark 'tis the village bell

[ocr errors]

Help me oh God, to trust in thee

Holy father, heavenly King

Holy, holy, holy Father

How beautiful the setting sun

How cheerful along the gay mead

How does the grateful bosom glow

How fine has the day been, how bright was the sun. 150

How free from care yon merry thrush

How good thou art, Almighty Lord

How heavenly the path of life.
How long sometimes a day appears
How many plants, we call them weeds
How precious is the Book Divine
Humble and poor may be my lot
If all our hopes and all our fears

[blocks in formation]

It is good when we lay on the pillow our head

I've had such a beautiful present to-day

I would not be a butterfly

I've found a violet to-day
Jesus, merciful and mild

Let all who are oppressed with grief
Let me not wander comfortless
Let not soft slumber close thine eyes
"Let there be Light"-Jehovah spake
Little children never give

[ocr errors]

Lord I have passed another day
Lord teach a little child to pray
Lord, what is life? 'tis like a flower
Lord when we bend before thy throne
Mother! can it be really true
Mother, what makes it thunder so
Mother, who made the stars which light

My Father! may I ere I rest

My God! Thou mak'st the sun to know

Not worlds on worlds, in phalanx deep
Oh condescend Almighty King

Oh God enthroned in worlds above

Oh God of Abraham! by whose hand

Oh harm me not! oh set me free

Oh praise the Lord in grateful lays

Oh green was the corn, as I rode on my way

Oh Lord! another day is flown

Oh Thou who dry'st the mourner's tear
Oh weep not for the joys that fade
Oh what is this which shines so bright

Oh who would keep a little bird confined
Once more the light of day I see
On Horeb's rock the Prophet stood
Our Father sits on yonder throne
Peace, the welcome sound proclaim
Pilgrim that hast meekly borne
Pleasant spring again is here
Praise to God, immortal praise
Remember, says the word of truth
Safe sleeping on its Mother's breast
See from a small and gentle stream

Some think it a hardship to work for their bread

[blocks in formation]

The cows are lying in the shade
The curling waves with awful roar

The darkness is over, the sun is on high
The flowers are blooming every where
The God of Heavn is pleased to see
The Lord my shepherd and my guide
The moon is very fair and bright
The pretty red quirrel lives up in a tree

There's not a leaf within the bower

These emmets how little they are in our eyes
The skylark, when the dews of morn
The spring flowers know their time to bloom
The sparrow builds her little nest

To do to others as I would

Though bitter frost hath cast around
Though grandpapa has long been blind
Thou O God! this day hath spared us
Thou walk'st from rosy sleep to play
Thus said Jesus, go and do

To prayer, to prayer, for the morning breaks
