Mind, as they have brought upon themfelves; or have not freed themselves from, when they might. 1, like the Cuckow, have repeated to you the fame Note in all my Letters, from my firft Writing to you to this very Day; to charm you into a Cool, Humble Temper of Mind: Which is the Foun dation of all Solid Prudence; and whereby a Man prefers Juft Dealing, and the fuiting a Man's Mind to his Fortunes, before making a Shew above the Substance. But 'tis a Theme, I love not to dwell upon. What is paft cannot be help'd. I had fome Difcourfe with our #Friend Dr. D. whom I look upon to be a ftay'd and Understanding Man: What way he contrives for your Release from this Condition you are in, I fhall not be Backward to A contribute my Share thereto; as it becomes him that profeffes himself,

P. S. It is not your drinking Water for a Spurt; but your conftantly abtaining from all Strong Drinks, and ufing Moderate Drink, not too ftrong nor too small, that must contribute to the regaining of a due Temper of Body: As alfo with Meekness, and Humility, and Care, and Diligence, to apply your felf to the Discharge of the Function you are call'd to, &c. They are feemingly little things, and that make no Noife, that do the Bufinefs; when more Sonorous Pretences end in worse than nothing. LET

LETTER XI.

THIS is only to let you know, that I received Your laft Letter, with the Sweet Sing- Enclosed Printed Paper. The Author of thofe Verfes, Eliezer Cob, was an Errand Ranter in the Late Times. He wrote the Fiery Flying Roll, &c. It would be too long a Story to tell all; and I have not been in Bodily Health this Month: This is the best Day I have had a great while. I am forry to hear Mr. Francis Roberts has loft his Lady: But all the things of this World hang together by very weak and flender Fimmers.

I partly have fome Knowledge of the Sweet Singers of Ifrael. But to Jay or fing Sweetly is little to the Purpose, while there is a Falfe Principle at the Heart. Perfe& Humility and Calmness, and Sincerity of Spirit, a Deteftation of Singularity, and Obedience to the Magiftrate in things Indifferent, is a fafe Symptom in Men. What a Difcord in Your Sweet Singer was the Admiration of that roaring Wretch you defcribed, that lately hanged himself! This fhould drive Senfible Perfons to the Study of acquiring the moft Cool and Humble Temper poffible; and for highHeats and enflamed Phancies,to let them go.

Dr. D. has Your Letters, and that Paper. He told me here laft Week, he would write

LETTER XII.

A Letter,

Returned but Yesterday out of Warwickshire, from my Lord Conway's; fo wherein the that I write to you upon the First Oppor- Socinians are tunity. As for my Tranflation, it is all done Cenfured, within a Few Sheets, fome feven or eight; and almost all my Scholia. I finish'd my Dialogues in Warwickshire this laft Time I was there; where I firft writ them in English: So that my tedious Task is well nigh quite over. But I had the Help of one who tranflated my Immortality of the Soul; which took up fo much of my Labour as that Treatife comes to, which is one of the Largeft. Your Obfervation of the Genius of the Place where you are, I do not wonder at: They that experience a Better State, are to be Humble, and Thankful to the great Captain of our Salvation, I wish you good Succefs, in whatever you undertake on the behalf of the truly Ancient and Apoftolick Faith Of which, the Belief of the Promife of the Spirit from our Powerful Mediatour, who died for us, A a 3

is one Part, and a main one. But the Carnally-minded are afraid to acknowledge any fuch Holy Inmate; but do willingly fancy the Suggestions and Reproofs of that Good Spirit to be their own Nature, that they may the more boldly affront it, or turn their Backs of it. This is a moft Execrable Piece of Hypocrify, which they are not aware of, which are still in the Flesh. Your Judgment touching Dr. Outram's Book is right, if I have any Judgment. And 'tis moft Certain, that the Socinians are a dry, ftrait-lac'd People; and for want of Philofophy, and of that better Spirit which inclines Men to Religion, even from their Natural Genius, are most what mere Legulious Interpreters of the Scripture; tho' they think none Comparable to themselves. How meanly they are appointed for these Pretenfions, the Father of them may witness against them; who was of fo mean and funk a Genius, that he deny'd the Existence of God could be proved, or difcovered by the Light of Natural Reafon; though it be point-blank against the Scri pture. Dr. Cudworth's Book will be out, they fay, the next Term. With my Service to Sir T. D. in haft I take leave, and reft,

Dear Sir,

Your affectionate Friend
To ferve you,

ftants.

OURSI received fome while ago; A Letter but could not write till now. Itouching the fhould be glad to hear that Mr. D. is well little Senfe of Schifm For I fufpect, unlefs my Letter mifcarried. Your Paraphrafe is very good and Natural: mong ProteI doubt of nothing, but of Jui in the third Verfe, which I fuppofe put for Eorum. I ་ know nothing but that Quarto of Mr. Smith's Extant. He was a very Good Man, and a good Scholar. I have no perJ fonal Acquaintance with Mr. C. but I take him to be a good temper'd Perfon, and well Learned. I am glad those two little Treatifes you mention of mine please you fo well. There is more Strength in them than Men ordinarily conceive at the First Perufal.

That Our Proteftants, and those that seem more than ordinarily Zealous for Religion, are fo little Senfible of Schifm, is a thing that, I must confefs, has often troubled me, when I have thought of it. But Actions that are not good in themselves, may have fuch favourable Interpretations and Gloffes; that I wonder that any one, that is not very Weak, or Worfe, fhould for their Caufe turn to the Church of Rome; out of God's Bleffing into the warm Sun. But of these things, I have fpoke my Mind fo fully in my Writings, that I will not trouble Аз 4
