the service of the house of God of gold five
thousand talents and ten thousand darics, and of
silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen
thousand talents, and of iron a hundred thousand
talents. And they with whom precious stones 8
were found gave them to the treasure of the
house of the LORD, under the hand of Jehiel the
Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced, for that
they offered willingly, because with a perfect
heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and
David the king also rejoiced with great joy.
Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all 10
the congregation: and David said, Blessed be
thou, O LORD, the God of Israel our father, for
ever and ever. Thine, O LORD, is the great- 11
ness, and the power, and the glory, and the
victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the
heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the
kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head
above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, 12
and thou rulest over all; and in thine hand is
power and might; and in thine hand it is to
make great, and to give strength unto all. Now 13
therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise
thy glorious name. But who am I, and what is 14
my people, that we should be able to offer so
willingly after this sort? for all things come of
thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, 15
as all our fathers were: our days on the earth
are as a shadow, and there is no abiding. O 16
LORD our God, all this store that we have pre-
pared to build thee an house for thine holy name
cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.
know also, my God, that thou triest the heart,
and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in
the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly
offered all these things: and now have I seen

with joy thy people, which are present here, to 18 offer willingly unto thee. O LORD, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and 'prepare 1Or, establish 19 their heart unto thee: and give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, 20 for the which I have made provision. And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD, the God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the 21 LORD, and the king. And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, 22 and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel; and did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the LORD to be 'prince, and Or, leader 23 Zadok to be priest. Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed 24 him. And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, 'sub25 mitted themselves unto Solomon the king. And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

26

Now David the son of Jesse reigned over all 27 Israel. And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned

and Solomon his son reigned in his stead. THE CHRONICLES.

AND Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly. 2 And Solomon spake unto all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every prince in all Israel, 3 the heads of the fathers' houses. So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for there was the tent of meeting of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the 4 wilderness. But the ark of God had David brought up from Kiriath-jearim to the place that David had prepared for it: for he had 5 pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem. Moreover the brasen altar, that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, 'was there before 1Or, as otherthe tabernacle of the LORD: and Solomon wise read, he 6 and the congregation sought unto it. And Solomon 'went up thither to the brasen altar Or, offered before the LORD, which was at the tent of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt offerings

iii. 5, &c.

In that night did God appear unto Solomon, See 1 Kings and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. 8 And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed

great kindness unto David my father, and hast made me king in his stead. Now, O LORD 9 God, let thy promise unto David my father be established for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I 10 may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great? And God said to Solomon, Because 11 this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of them that hate thee, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: wisdom and 12 knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like. So Solomon 'came from his 13 journey to the high place that was at Gibeon, from the high from before the tent of meeting, unto Jerusalem; place. and he reigned over Israel.

'And Solomon gathered chariots and horse- 14 men and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, which he placed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem. And the king made silver 15 and gold to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore trees that are in the lowland, for abundance. And 16 the horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt; the king's merchants received them in droves, each drove at a price. And 17 they fetched up, and brought out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of
