7. THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS.

L.M.

f WE triumph in the glorious grace That set us in this English land, And welcome the high earthly place

Wherein our God has made us stand.

f But, oh! to us a grace more great,
A dignity more dear is given;
He links us to a nobler state,
He makes us citizens of heaven.

[f Yes, mightily our hearts are bound

This goodly fatherland to love; But more our own Emmanuel's ground,

That better, dearer land above.]

f Our land's good laws we proudly praise,

[tell;

Our land's great tale with triumph
But, oh! what majesty arrays
The people of Emmanuel!

[f Their glorious freedom how complete!

How absolute His holy will!
What task divine, what tribute
sweet,
[fulfil!]
Their spirits bring, their hands

mf Dear fellow-citizens they greet,
Of every age, of every clime;
Far dwellers in ne city meet;
Strange voices raise one song
sublime.

mf O city, where God's people dwell! O home, where no sweet bonds are riven !

O country of Emmanuel !

The only fatherland is heaven. f Joy! joy our King doth never die! Our city doth for ever stand;

[blocks in formation]

f COME, let us join our friends above, That have obtained the prize, And on the eagle wings of love

To joy celestial rise;
Let all the saints terrestrial sing
With those to glory gone;
For all the servants of our King,

In earth and heaven, are one. mf One family, we dwell in Him,

One Church, above, beneath, Though now divided by the stream, The narrow stream of death; One army of the living God,

To His command we bow;

Part of His host hath crossed the
flood,

dim And part is crossing now.
[mpOur old companions in distress
We haste again to see,
And eager long for our release
And full felicity;

cres E'en now by faith we join our hands

With those that went before. And greet the blood-besprinkled bands

On the eternal shore.]

mf Our spirits too shall quickly join,
Like theirs with glory crowned,
And shout to see our Captain's sign,
To hear His trumpet sound.
Oh that we now might grasp our
Guide!

Oh that the word were given!

cresCome, Lord of Hosts! the waves mf My soul! bear thou thy part;

f YE holy angels bright,
Who wait at God's right hand,
Or through the realms of light
Fly at your Lord's command!

Assist our song,
For else the theme
Too high doth seem
For mortal tongue.

mp Ye blessed souls at rest,
Who ran this earthly race,
cres And now, from sin released,
Behold the Saviour's face!
God's praises sound,
As in His light.
With sweet delight
Ye do abound.

mf Ye saints, who toil below!
Adore your heavenly King,
And onward as ye go
Some joyful anthem sing:

Take what He gives; And praise Him still, Through good and ill, Who ever lives!

Triumph in God above,

And with a well-tuned heart Sing thou the songs of love! Let all thy days

f HAPPY the souls to Jesus joined, And saved by, grace alone: Walking in all His ways they find Their heaven on earth begun.

f The Church triumphant in Thy love

Their mighty joys we know: They sing the Lamb in hymns above,

And we in hymns below.

f Thee, in Thy glorious realm they praise,

And bow before Thy throne ; We, in the kingdom of Thy graceThe kingdoms are but one.

came?

They, with united breath, cres Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, f Their triumph to His death.

mf They marked the footsteps that He trod,

His zeal inspired their breast; And, following their Incarnate God, Possess the promised rest.
