1 YE humble souls, approach your God
With songs of sacred praise;
For he is good, supremely good,
And kind are all his ways.

2 All nature owns his guardian care;
In him we live and move;
But nobler benefits declare
The wonders of his love.

3 He gave his well beloved Son,

To save our souls from sin:

C. M.

"Tis here he makes his goodness known, And proves it all divine.

4 To this dear Refuge, Lord, we come,
And here our hope relies;

A safe defense, a peaceful home,
When storms of trouble rise.

5 Thine eye beholds, with kind regard,
The souls who trust in thee;
Their humble hope thou wilt reward
With bliss divinely free.

6 Great God! to thine almighty love
What honors shall we raise?
Not all the raptured songs above
Can render equal praise.

[blocks in formation]

Through burning climes they pass unhurt, And breathe in tainted air.

3 When by the dreadful tempest borne
High on the broken wave,

They know thou art not slow to hear,
Nor impotent to save.

4 The storm is laid, the winds retire,
Obedient to thy will;

The sea, that roars at thy command,
At thy command is still.

5 In midst of dangers, fears, and deaths,
Thy goodness I'll adore;

6

I'll praise thee for thy mercies past, And humbly hope for more.

My life, while thou preserv'st that life, Thy sacrifice shall be;

And death, when death shall be my lot, Shall join my soul to thee.

God our Benefactor.

1 Mr Maker and my King! To thee my all I owe;

Thy sovereign bounty is the spring, Whence all my blessings flow.

2 The creature of thy hand,
On thee alone I live;

My God! thy benefits demand
More praise than I can give.

3 Lord, what can I impart,

When all is thine before?

Thy love demands a thankful heart:
The gift, alas, how poor!

4 Shall I withhold thy duc?

And shall my passions rove?

Lord, form this wretched heart anew, And fill it with thy love.

1 GREAT God! let all my tuneful powers
Awake, and sing thy mighty name:
Thy hand revolves my circling hours --
Thy hand, from whence my being came.
2 Seasons and moons, still rolling round
In beauteous order, speak thy praise;
And years, with smiling mercy crowned,
To thee successive honors raise.

1 To thy pastures fair and large, Heavenly Shepherd, lead thy charge; And my couch, with tend'rest care, 'Mid the springing grass prepare. 2 When I faint with summer's heat, Thou shalt guide my weary feet To the streams that, still and slow, Through the verdant meadows flow.

3 Safe the dreary vale I tread,

By the shades of death o'erspread, With thy rod and staff supplied This my guard, and that my guide.

4 Constant to my latest end,
Thou my footsteps shalt attend;
Thou shalt bid thy hallowed dome
Yield me an eternal home.

"Truly, my soul waiteth upon God."

1 FATHER! thy paternal care

Has my guardian been, my guide;
Every hallowed wish and prayer
Has thy hand of love supplied:
Thine is every thought of bliss
Left by hours and days gone by;
Every hope thy offspring is,
Beaming from futurity.

2 Every sun of splendid ray,
Every moon that shines serene,
Every morn that welcomes day,
Every evening's twilight scene,
Every hour which wisdom brings,
Every incense at thy shrine,
These, and all life's holiest things,
And its fairest all are thine.

3 And for all, my hymns shall rise
Daily to thy gracious throne:
Thither let my asking eyes

Turn unwearied, righteous One! Through life's strange vicissitude, There reposing all my care;

78.

Trusting still, through ill and good, Fixed, and cheered, and counseled there.

1 RETURN, my soul, and sweetly rest On thy almighty Father's breast; The bounties of his grace adore, And count his wondrous mercies o'er. 2 Thy mercy, Lord, preserved my breath, And snatched my fainting soul from death;

Removed my sorrows, dried my tears, And saved me from surrounding snares. 3 What shall I render to the Lord? Or how his wondrous grace record? To him my grateful voice I'll raise, With just thanksgiving to his praise. 4 O Zion! in thy sacred courts,

Where glory dwells, and joy resorts,
To notes divine I'll tune the song,
And praise shall flow from every tongue.

"I will love thee, O Lord, my strength." L.M.81.3 When, in the slippery paths of youth,

Psalm 18.

1 THEE will I love, O God, and own
My strength is in thine arm alone.
Jehovah is my rock, my tower,
My Saviour in the darkest hour;
My God, my strength, my confidence,
My buckler, helm, and high defense:
On him I call, and bless his name;
Ne'er shall my hope be put to shame.
2 With forms of death on every side,
Beset with foes, my courage died;
Hell compassed me with horrors dread,
The snares of death were round me spread:
In my distress to God I prayed,

I called upon my God for aid;

He heard my cry; it reached his throne: Thee will I love, O God, alone.

[blocks in formation]

With heedless step I ran,

Thine arm, unseen, conveyed me safe,
And led me up to man.

4 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.

5 Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And, after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

6 Through all eternity to thee
A joyful song I'll raise:
But, oh! eternity 's too short
To utter all thy praise.

Divine Providence and Grace,

1 ALMIGHTY Father! gracious Lord!
Kind Guardian of my days!
Thy mercies let my heart record
In songs of grateful praise.

2 In life's first dawn, my tender frame Was thine indulgent care,

C. M.

Long ere I could pronounce thy name,
Or breathe the infant prayer.

3 Each rolling year new favors brought
From thine exhaustless store;
But, ah! in vain my lab'ring thought
Would count thy mercies o'er.

4 Still I adore thee, gracious Lord!

For favors more divine

That I have known thy sacred word,
Where all thy glories shine.

5 Lord, when this mortal frame decays,
And every weakness dies,
Complete the wonders of thy grace,
And raise me to the skies.

C. M. 213

"Thou hast taught me from my youth."
Psalm 71.

1 ALMIGHTY Father of mankind!
On thee my hopes remain;
And when the day of trouble comes,
I shall not trust in vain.

2 In early years, thou wast my guide,
And of my youth, the friend;
And, as my days began with thee,
With thee my days shall end.

1 FATHER of mercies! God of love!
My Father and my God!
I'll sing the honors of thy name,
And spread thy praise abroad.

2 In every period of my life

Thy thoughts of love appear;
Thy mercies gild each transient scene,
And crown each passing year.

3. In all thy mercies, may my soul
A Father's bounty see;
Nor let the gifts thy grace bestows
Estrange my heart from thee.

4 Teach me, in times of deep distress,
To own thy hand, O God!
And in submissive silence learn
The lessons of thy rod.

5 Through every period of my life,
Each bright, each clouded scene,
Give me a meek and humble mind,
Still equal and serene.

6 Then may I close my eyes in death,
Redeemed from anxious fear;
For death itself, my God, is life,
If thou be with me there.

1 FATHER, I know that all my life Is portioned out for me;

The changes that will surely come
I do not fear to see:

I ask thee for a present mind,
Intent on pleasing thee.

2 I ask thee for a thoughtful love,

Through constant watching wise,
To meet the glad with joyful smiles,
And wipe the weeping eyes;
A heart at leisure from itself,
To soothe and sympathize.

3 I would not have the restless will
That hurries to and fro,

That seeks for some great thing to do,
Or secret thing to know:

I would be treated as a child,
And guided where I go.

4 Wherever in the world I am,
In whatsoe'er estate,

I have a fellowship with hearts,
To keep and cultivate;

A work of lowly love to do

For him on whom I wait.

5 I ask thee for the daily strength,
To none that ask denied,

A mind to blend with outward life,
While keeping at thy side;
Content to fill a little space,

If thou be glorified.

6 And if some things I do not ask,
Among my blessings be,

I'd have my spirit filled the more
With grateful love to thee;

More careful not to serve thee much,
But please thee perfectly.

2 Our vows, our prayers, we now present Before thy throne of grace;

God of our fathers! be the God
Of their succeeding race.

3 Through each perplexing path of life
Our wand'ring footsteps guide;
Give us, each day, our daily bread,
And raiment fit provide.

4 Oh, spread thy covering wings around, Till all our wand'rings cease,

And at our Father's loved abode,
Our souls arrive in peace.

[blocks in formation]

5 Since God doth thus his wondrous love
Through all my life extend,
That life to him I will devote,
And in his temple spend.

S. M. 219

I cannot yield to fear; Though I should walk through death's dark shade,

My Shepherd's with me there.

5 In spite of all my foes,

Thou dost my table spread; & My cup with blessings overflows, And joy exalts my head.

6 The bounties of thy love

Shall crown my future days;

Nor from thy house will I remove,
Nor cease to speak thy praise.

1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye:
My noon-day walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.
2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales, and dewy meads,
My weary, wand'ring steps he leads;
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still:
Thy friendly rod shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade
4 Though in a bare and rugged way,
Through devious, lonely wilds I stray,
Thy presence shall my pains beguile:
The barren wilderness shall smile,
With sudden greens and herbage crowned;
And streams shall murmur all around.

C. M. 220

The Shepherd, by whose constant care My wants are all supplied.

2 In tender grass he makes me feed, And gently there repose;

Then leads me to cool shades, and where
Refreshing water flows.

3 He does my wand'ring soul reclaim,
And, to his endless praise,
Instruct with humble zeal to walk
In his most righteous ways.

4 I pass the gloomy vale of death,
From fear and danger free;
For there his aiding rod and staff
Defend and comfort me

[blocks in formation]

1 THE Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want: He makes me down to lie

In pastures green; he leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

2 My soul he doth restore again;
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
Ev'n for his own name's sake.

3 Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale, Yet will I fear no ill;

For thou art with me, and thy rod
And staff me comfort still.

4 My table thou hast furnishéd
In presence of my foes;

My head thou dost with oil anoirt,
And my cup overflows.
