5 This faith would cheer my gloomy way,
And turn my darkness into day;
And still my constant aim would be,
My God, to live or die to thee.

[blocks in formation]

HE promises I sing,

THE

Which sov'reign love hath spoke;

Nor will the eternal King

His words of grace revoke;

They stand secure,

And stedfast still;
Not Zion's Hill
Abides so sure.

2 The mountains melt away
When once the Judge appears,
And sun and moon decay,

years;

That measure mortals
But still the same,
In radient lines,
The promise shines
Through all the flame.

3 Their harmony shall sound
Through mine attentive ears,
When thunders cleave the ground,
And dissipate the spheres;

'Midst all the shock

Of that dread scene,
I stand serene,
Thy word my rock.

108 Breathing after divine Love.

[ocr errors]

LOVE divine, how sweet thou art !
When shall I find my willing heart
All taken up by thee!

I thirst, and long, and pant to prove
The greatness of redeeming love,
The love of Christ to me.

2 Almighty, precious love of God;
O that it now were shed abroad
In my poor stony heart!
For love I sigh, for love I pine,
This only portion, Lord, be mine,
Be mine this better part!

3 O that I could for ever sit
With Mary at my Master's feet,
Be this my happy choice!
My only care, delight and bliss,
My joy, my heav'n on earth, be this,
To hear the Bridegroom's voice.

4 Thy love alone do I require,
Nothing on earth beneath desire,
Nothing in heav'n above;

Let earth and all its trifles go,
Give me, O Lord, thy love to know,
Give me thy precious love.

SWEE

Delight in the name of Jesus.

WEETER sounds than music knows,
Charm me in Immanuel's name;

All her hopes my spirit owes

To his birth, and cross, and shame.

2 When he came the angels sung Glory be to God on high:

Lord, unloose my stammering tongue-
Who should louder sing than I?

3 Did the Lord a man become

That he might the law fulfil!
Bleed and suffer in my room!

7s.

And canst thou then my tongue, be still?

4 No; I must my praises bring,

Though they worthless are, and weak;
For, should I refuse to sing,

Sure the very stones would speak.

5 O my Saviour, shield, and sun, Shepherd, brother, husband, friend; Ev'ry precious name in one;

I will love Thee without end.

110 Praise for God's unspeakable Gift. S. M. D. FATHER, our hearts we lift

Up to thy gracious throne,

And bless thee for the precious gift
Of thy incarnate Son.

The gift unspeakable
We thankfully receive:
O may we of thy goodness tell,
And to thy glory live!

2 Jesus, the holy child,

Doth by his birth declare
That God and man are reconcil'd,
And one in him we are:

A peace on earth he brings
Which never more shall end;

The Lord of hosts, the King of kings
Declares himself our friend.

may we all receive

The new-born Prince of peace,

And meekly in his Spirit live,

And in his love increase!

Till he convey us home,

Cry ev'ry soul aloud,

"Come, Thou desire of nations, come,

And take us home to God."

111 The Joy of Faith in Christ's Kingly Office. P. M.

REJOICE, the Lord is King,

Your God and King adore;

Mortals, give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore:

Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again 1 say rejoice.

2 Jesus the Saviour reigns,

The God of truth and love;
When he had purg'd our stains,
He took his seat above:

Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

3 His kingdom cannot fail,

He rules o'er earth and heav'n,
The keys of death and hell
Are to our Jesus giv'n:

Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice:
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice;

4 He sits at God's right-hand,
Till all his foes submit,
And bow to his command,
And fall beneath his feet;
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

5 He all his foes shall quell,

Shall all our sins destroy,
And ev'ry bosom fill

With pure seraphic joy:

Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

6 Rejoice in glorious hope,

Jesus the Judge shall come,

And take his servants up

To their eternal home:

We soon shall hear th' archangel's voice,
The trump of God shall sound Rejoice.
