O, when shall come the moment
When, brighter far than morn,
The sunshine of Thy glory

Shall on Thy people dawn?

How long, O gracious Master,
Wilt Thou Thy household leave?
So long hast Thou now tarried,
Few Thy return believe:
Immersed in sloth and folly,
Thy servants, Lord, we see;
And few of us stand ready
With joy to welcome Thee.

How long, O heavenly Bridegroom,
How long wilt Thou delay?
And yet how few are grieving

That Thou dost absent stay:

Thy very Bride her portion
And calling hath forgot,
And seeks for ease and glory

Where Thou, her Lord, are not.

O, wake Thy slumb'ring virgins;
Send forth the solemn cry,
Let all Thy saints repeat it,-
"The Bridegroom draweth nigh!"
May all our lamps be burning,
Our loins well girded be,

Each longing heart preparing

With joy Thy face to see. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

Nor unto us, but Thee, O Lord,
Be praise and glory given,
For every holy thought and word
That brings us nearer heaven.

Thy saints are in Thy faithful hand,
Secure beneath Thine eye,
And safe, at last, they all shall stand
Before Thy throne on high.

Redeemed from sin, and saved by grace,
Thy glory they shall see;
And eye to eye, and face to face,
For ever dwell with thee.

O, hasten Lord, the glorious day,
Call all Thy children home;
Teach us in earnest hope to pray,
Lord Jesu, quickly come! Amen.

Our King in clouds of light

With bright angelic train

Shall come, and all His saints unite,

With Him in bliss to reign.

Then let us ready stand,

For His appearing wait,

Have no ungodly work in hand,
And deeds of darkness hate.

Thrice happy all shall be

Who thus are watchful found, They shall their Lord with gladness see, And be with honour crowned.

All glory to Thy Name,
One God in Trinity;

To-day, and yesterday, the same,
And everlastingly. Amen.

JESUS, Thy Church with longing eyes,
For Thy expected coming waits;
When will the promised light arise,
And glory beam from Zion's gates ?

Come, gracious Lord, our hearts renew, Our foes repel, our wrongs redress; Man's rooted enmity subdue,

And crown Thy gospel with success.

O come, and reign o'er every land,
Let Satan from his throne be hurl'd,
All nations bow to thy command,
And grace revive a dying world.

Yes, Thou wilt speedily appear
The smitten earth already reels,
And not far off we seem to hear

The thunder of thy chariot wheels.

Teach us in watchfulness and prayer
To wait for the appointed hour,
And fit us by Thy grace to share

The triumphs of Thy conquering power.

16.

Amen.

8-7, 8-7, 8-8-7.

GREAT GOD, what do I see and hear?
The end of things created;

The Judge of all men doth appear
On clouds of glory seated.

The trumpet sounds, the

graves restore The dead, which they contained before. Prepare, my soul, to meet Him.

The dead in Christ shall first arise,
At the last trumpet sounding,
Caught up to meet Him in the skies,
With joy their Lord surrounding.
No gloomy fears their souls dismay,
presence sheds eternal day

His

On those prepared to meet Him.

But sinners filled with guilty fears
Behold His wrath prevailing ;

For they shall rise, and find their tears
And sighs are unavailing.
The day of grace is past and gone :
Trembling they stand before the Throne,
All unprepared to meet Him.

Great God! to Thee our prayers we pour,
In deep abasement bending:
O, shield us in that last dread hour,
Thy wondrous love extending.
May we in this our trial day,

With faithful hearts Thy words obey,
And thus prepare to meet Him.

Amen.

O, SAVIOUR, is Thy promise fled ?
Nor longer might Thy grace endure
To heal the sick, and raise the dead,
And preach the gospel to the poor?

Come, Jesus, come! return again,

With brighter beam Thy servants bless,
Who long to feel Thy perfect reign,
And share Thy Kingdom's happiness!

A feeble race, by passion driven,
In darkness and in doubt we roam,
And lift our anxious eyes to Heaven,
Our hope, our harbour, and our home.
