Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God, and thus Address'd their joyful song:-
"All glory be to God on high, And on the earth be peace; Goodwill, henceforth, from heaven to men, Begin and never cease."
To Him who left His throne above, Mankind from death to raise, To Father and to Holy Ghost Be everlasting praise. Amen.
O SAVIOUR of the world forlorn, This day to save us Thou wast born; Protect us through the coming night, And ever save us by Thy might.
Now, Lord, be Thou in mercy nigh, And spare Thy servants when they cry; Our sins blot out, our prayers receive, Thy light throughout our darkness give.
O let not sleep the soul oppress, Nor secret foe the heart possess ; Our flesh keep chaste, that it may be A holy temple unto Thee.
To Thee, who makest souls anew, Our hearts in prayer would humbly sue, That pure and free from inward stain We from our beds may rise again.
All praise to God the Father be, All praise, Eternal Son, to Thee, Whom with the Spirit we adore For ever and for evermore.
ANGELS, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth, Ye who sang creation's story Now proclaim Messiah's birth, Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King.
Shepherds in the field abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant-light, Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King.
Saints before the altar bending, Watching long with hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord descending, In His temple shall appear, Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King.
Sinners, wrung with true repentance, Doomed for guilt to endless pains, Justice now revokes the sentence, Mercy calls you-break your chains : Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King.
Saints and angels join in praising Thee, the Father, Spirit, Son; Evermore their voices raising To the eternal Three in One. Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the new-born King. Amen.
SHADOWS are fled, a brighter ray Dawns with the opening year; The law of Moses fades away, Love reigns instead of fear.
The Son has left His Father's throne Our pain and grief to share,
In human form the Sinless One The shame of sin will bear.
For us to cancel every claim This day the Lord began, Freely a debtor He became
To the whole law for man.
This day that name He first did own At which the world should bow,This day His name indeed was shown, Jesus, true Saviour, now.
To Him whose precious blood was shed That guilty man might live,
To our Redeemer and our Head
Blessing and praise we give. Amen.
THE ancient law departs,
And all its terrors cease,
For Jesus makes with faithful hearts
A covenant of peace.
The Light of Light divine,
True brightness undefiled,
He bears for us the shame of sin, A holy spotless child.
To-day the name is Thine, At which we bend the knee; They call Thee Jesus, child divine! Our Jesus deign to be.
All praise, Eternal Son, For Thy redeeming love; With Father, Spirit, ever One, In glorious might above. Amen.
HAIL the day when in the sky Shone the day-spring from on high, When the star from heaven displayed Where the Holy Child was laid.
Onward moving that bright flame Did the Saviour's birth proclaim; And the Gentiles came to bring Offerings to their Infant King.
Lord of Heaven! O may Thy light Shine upon our darkened sight, Till it guide us to the rest Where Thy people shall be blest.
May it light us on the road Leading to the throne of God; And our offering then shall be Hearts devoted, Lord, to thee.
