Hark how He groans! while nature shakes
And earth's strong pillars bend;
The temple's veil in sunder breaks,
The solid marbles rend.

'Tis done! the precious ransom's paid,
"Receive my soul" He cries;
See where He bows His sacred head!
He bows His head, and dies.

But soon He'll break death's envious chain

And in full glory shine;

O, Lamb of God, was ever pain,

Was ever love like Thine ?

All praise to God, the Three in One,
In highest worlds be paid,

His glory by our lips proclaimed,
And by our lives displayed. Amen.

80.

IN our Lord's atoning grief
Be our rest and sure relief,
Jesu! thou our refuge be,
Sweet it is to trust in Thee.

7's.

Crucified! we Thee adore,
Thee with all our hearts implore,
In the realms of heavenly light
With Thy faithful us unite.

Thee our only hope and tower,
By Thy passion's solemn hour;
Now we pray our sins efface,
And increase Thy gifts of grace.

Christ! by faithless hands betrayed,
Christ! for us a captive made,

Christ, upon the bitter tree,

Slain for man, all praise to Thee! Amen.

81.

8-7, 8-7, 7-7.

He who once in righteous vengeance 'Whelmed the world beneath the flood,

Once again in mercy cleansed it

With his own most precious blood;
Coming from His Throne on high
On the painful cross to die.

O the wisdom of th' Eternal!
O the depth of love divine!
O the sweetness of that mercy

Which in Jesus Christ doth shine!
We were sinners doomed to die,
Jesus paid the penalty.

When before the Judge we tremble,
Conscious of His broken laws,
May the blood of His atonement
Cry aloud, and plead our cause,
Bid our guilty terrors cease,
Be our pardon and our peace.

Prince and Author of Salvation,
Lord of majesty supreme,
Jesu, praise to Thee be given

By the world Thou didst redeem;
Glory to the Father be,

And the Spirit, One with Thee. Amen.

82.

8-7, 8-7, 4-7.

HARK! the voice of love and mercy
Sounds aloud from Calvary!
See, it rends the rocks asunder,

Shakes the earth, and veils the sky!
"It is finish'd!"

Hear the dying Saviour cry.

"It is finish'd!" O what pleasure
Do the wondrous words afford!
Heav'nly blessings, without measure,
Flow to us from Christ the Lord!
"It is finish'd!"

Saints, his dying words record.

All the types and shadows finish'd
Of the ceremonial law:

Man's redemption now completed,
Death and hell no more shall awe:
"It is finish'd!"

Saints, from hence your comfort draw.

Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs,
Join the triumph to proclaim;
All on earth, and all in heaven,
Join to praise the Saviour's name :
Alleluia!

Glory to the bleeding Lamb! Amen.

83.

8-7, 8-7, 4-7.

Now my soul, thy voice upraising,
Sing the Cross in mournful strain;
Tell the sorrows, all amazing,—
Tell the wounds, the dying pain,
Which our Saviour

Sinless bore, for sinners slain.

He the cruel scourge enduring
Ransom for our sins to pay,
By His stripes transgressors curing,
Raising those who wounded lay;
Bore our sorrows,

And removed our pains away.

He to freedom hath restored us
By the very bonds He bare;
His nail-pierced limbs afford us
Each a stream of mercy rare;
Nailed He draws us

To the cross, and keeps us there.

When His painful life was ended,
From that fount, His wounded side,
Blood and water straight descended
Each a sacramental tide,

One to cleanse us,

One to feed our souls applied.

Jesu! may Thy promised blessing
Comfort to our souls afford;
May we, now Thy love possessing,
And at length our full reward,
Ever praise Thee,

Thee, our ever glorious Lord! Amen.

[blocks in formation]

LORD JESU, when we stand afar
And gaze upon Thy holy cross,
In love of Thee and scorn of self,
O! may we count the world as loss.

When we behold Thy bleeding wounds
And the rough way that Thou hast trod,
Make us to hate the load of sin

That lay so heavy on our God.

O holy Lord! uplifted high,

With outstretched arms, in mortal woe, Embracing in Thy wondrous love

The sinful world that lies below.
