5 But vaft rewards fhall recompenfe

Their faithful fervice here,

And power and love fhall banish thence
All frailties and all fear.

PSALM CXXVI.

Univerfal prefence and inspection of God our maker, our preferver, and our judge.

MY heart and all my ways, O God,
By thee are fearch'd and seen;
Mine outward acts thine eye obferves,
My fecret thoughts within.

2 Attendant on my steps all day
Thy providence I fee,

3

And in the folitude of night
I am present ftill with thee.

No spot the boundless realms of space
Whence thou art abfent know:
In heaven thou reign'ft a glorious king,
An awful judge below.

4 Goodness, and majefty, and power
Thro' all thy works are fhown;
Brightly difplay'd in nature's frame,
Nor faintly in my own.

5 By thee, their various place and use
Were all my parts affign'd;
Ere yet those parts a being had,
But in thy forming mind..

6 Ten thousand thousand times my life
I have to thy goodness ow'd;
Thy daily care preferves the gift
Thy bounty first beftow'd.

7 Lord, if within my thoughtless heart
Thou aught fhould'st disapprove;
The fecret mifchief bring to light,
And by thy grace remove.

8 If e'er my ways have been perverfe,
Or foolish in thy view,

Call back my fteps to thy commands,

And form my life anew.

PSALM CXXVII.

Man's frailty and God's eternity.

1 O GOD, our help in ages paft, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the ftormy blast,

And our eternal home.

2 Before

2 Before the heavens in order stood,
Or earth receiv'd its frame,
From everlasting thou art God,
To endless years the same.

3 Thy word hath doom'd our flesh to earth,
Return, ye fons of men :

From duft all nations took their birth,
And fink to duft again.

4 A thousand of our hafty years
Are shorter in thy fight

Than yesterday to us appears;
Short as a watch of night.

5 Time, like an ever-rolling ftream,
Bears all its fons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

6 The bufy tribes of flesh and blood
With all their hopes and fears
Are carried downwards by the flood,
And loft in following years.

7 Like flowery fields the nations stand,
Pleas'd with the morning light;

The

The flow'rs beneath the mower's hand

Lie withering ere 'tis night.

8 Q God, our help in ages paft,

Our hope for years to come,

Be thou our guard while dangers laft,
And our eternal home.

SHORT METRE.

PSALM I.

Defires and hopes of penitence.

I LET no events caft down
Those who from evil flee,
Nor disappointment fhame their hopes
Who wait, O Lord, on thee.

2 Lord, fet before mine eyes
Thy ways in clearer light;
And help me always to perform
What is pleafing in thy fight.

3

From the ftraight paths of truth,
Ne'er let me turn aftray:

On thee, my gracious God, I wait
To learn and keep thy way.

[blocks in formation]

No ftrict enquiry make:

The faults that I renounce, forgive

For thine own goodness fake.
