3 Thy kindness early let me hear, Whose trust on thee depends; Teach me the way which I should go; My soul to thee ascends.

4 Thou art my God: thy righteous will Instruct me to obey;

Let thy good Spirit lead and keep
My soul in the right way.

PSALM CXLIV.

C. M.

Assistance and Victory in the Christian Warfare.

1 FOR ever blessed be the Lord,
My Saviour and my Shield;
He sends his Spirit with his word
To arm me for the field.

2 When sin and hell their force unite,
He makes my soul his care,
Instructs me to the heav'nly fight,
And guards me through the war.

3 A friend and helper so divine
Doth my weak courage raise ;
He makes the glorious vict'ry mine,
And his shall be the praise.

[blocks in formation]

MY God, my King, thy various praise
Shall fill the remnant of my days:
Thy grace employ my humble tongue,
Till death and glory raise my song.

2 The wings of ev'ry hour shall bear
Some thankful tribute to thine ear;
And ev'ry setting sun shall see
New works of duty done for thee.

3 Thy truth and justice I'll proclaim;
Thy bounty flows, an endless stream;
Thy mercy swift; thine anger slow,
But dreadful, to the stubborn foe.

4 Let distant times and nations raise
The long succession of thy praise;
And unborn ages make my song
The joy and labour of their tongue.

5 But who can speak thy wondrous deeds?
Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds ;
Vast and unsearchable thy ways;
Vast and immortal be thy praise.

[blocks in formation]

1 SWEET is the mem'ry of thy grace,
My God, my heav'nly King;
Let age to age thy righteousness
In sounds of glory sing.

2 God reigns on high; but not confines
His goodness to the skies;

Thro' the whole earth his bounty shines,
And ev'ry want supplies.

3 With longing eyes thy creatures wait
On thee for daily food;

Thy lib'ral hand provides their meat,
And fills their mouths with good.

4 How kind are thy compassions, Lord!
How slow thine anger moves!
But soon he sends his pard'ning word
To cheer the souls he loves.

5 Creatures, with all their endless race,
Thy pow'r and praise proclaim;
But saints that taste thy richer grace,
Delight to bless thy name.

PSALM CXLVI.

P. M.

God the Protector of the Saints.

HAPPY the man whose hopes rely On Isr'el's God: he made the sky, And earth, and seas, with all their train; His truth for ever stands secure ;

He saves th' oppress'd, he feeds the poor; And none shall find his promise vain.

2 The Lord hath eyes to give the blind;
The Lord supports the sinking mind;
He sends the lab'ring conscience peace;
He helps the stranger in distress,
The widow and the fatherless,
And grants the pris'ner sweet release.

3 I'll praise him while he lends me breath;
And when my voice is lost in death
Praise shall employ my nobler pow'rs:
My days of praise shall ne'er be past,
While life, and thought, and being last,
Or immortality endures.

PSALM CXLVII.

C. M.

God's Care for his Church.

10 PRAISE the Lord with hymns of joy, And celebrate his fame;

For pleasant, good, and comely 'tis,
To praise his holy name.

2 His holy city God will build,
Though levell'd with the ground;
Bring back his people, though dispers'd
Through all the nations round.

3 He kindly heals the broken hearts,
And all their wounds does close;
He tells the number of the stars;
Their sev'ral names he knows.

4 Great is the Lord, and great his pow'r, His wisdom has no bound;

The meek he raises, and throws down
The wicked to the ground.

PSALM CXLVIII.

[ocr errors]

P. M.

Heaven and Earth called upon to praise God.

1 YE boundless realms of joy,
Exalt your Maker's fame;
His praise your songs employ
Above the starry frame ; 1
Your voices raise,

Ye cherubim,
And seraphim,

To sing his praise,

2 Thou moon that rul'st the night,
And sun, that guid'st the day,

Ye glitt'ring stars of light,
To him your homage pay:
