A living and a dead Faith.

1 MISTAKEN souls that dream of heav'n,
And make their empty boast
Of inward joys and sins forgiv'n,
While they are slaves to lust!
2 Vain are our fancies, airy flights,
If faith be cold and dead :
None but a living faith unites
To Christ the living head.

3 "Tis faith that changes all the heart;
"Tis faith that works by love;
That bids all sinful joys depart,
And lifts the thoughts above.

4 "Tis faith that conquers earth and hell,
By a celestial pow'r;

This is the grace that shall prevail
In the decisive hour.

5 Faith must obey her Father's will,
As well as trust his grace:
A pard'ning God is jealous still
For his own holiness.

HYMN LVIII.

Preserving Grace.

S. M.

ITO God, the only wise,

Our Saviour, and our King,

Let all the saints, below the skies,
Their humble praises sing.

2 'Tis his almighty love,

His counsel, and his care, Preserves us safe from sin and death, And ev'ry hurtful snare.

3 He will present our souls, Unblemish'd and complete, Before the glory of his face, With joys divinely great.

4 Then all the chosen seed
Shall meet around the throne;
Shall bless the conduct of his grace,
And make his wonders known,

5 To our Redeemer, God,
Wisdom and pow'r belongs;
Immortal crowns of majesty,
And everlasting songs.

God's Presence is Light in Darkness.

1 MY God the spring of all my joys, The life of my delights;

The glory of my brightest days,
And comfort of my nights.

÷ 11 darkest shades, if he appear,
My fawning is begun ;

Be & my son's sweet morning-star,
And be my rising sun.

The ging heav'ns around me shine
Wra beams of sacred bliss,

Wie Jesus shews his heart is mine,
Aai vaispers I am his.

4 My stil would leave this heavy clay
A tuc transporting word;
Run ug wird jey the shining way,
Tembrace my dearest Lord:

3 Fearless of bell, and ghastly death,
I'd break through ev'ry foe;
The wings of love, and arms of faith
Should bear me conqu'ror through.

1 PLUNG D in a gulf of dark despair,
We wretched sinners lay;
Without one cheering beam of hope,
Or spark of glimm❜ring day.

• With pitying eyes the Prince of grace dd our helpless grief;

He saw, and (O amazing love!)
He ran to our relief.

Down from the shining seats above,
With joyful haste he fled;
Enter'd the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

O! for this love let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break;
And all harmonious human tongues
Their Saviour's praises speak.

Angels, assist our mighty joys,
Strike all your harps of gold:
But when you raise your highest notes,
His love can ne'er be told.

HYMN LXI. C. M.

Comfort in the Covenant made with Christ. OUR God, how firm his promise stands, E'en when he hides his face; He trusts in our Redeemer's hands His glory and his grace.

2 Then why, my soul, these sad complaints, Since Christ and we are one?

Thy God is faithful to his saints;
Is faithful to his Son.
