The Lamentation of a Sinner.

LORD, turn not thy face away From him that lies prostrate, Lamenting sore his sinful life, Before thy mercy's gate.

Which thou dost open wide to those,
That do lament their sin ;
O shut it not against me, Lord,
But let me enter in.

Call me not to a strict account,
How I have lived here;
For then I know right well, O Lord,
Most vile 1 shall appear.

I need not to confess my life;
For surely thou canst tell,
What I have been, and what I am,
Thou knowest very well.

5 O Lord, I need not to repeat
What now I beg and crave;
For thou dost know, before I ask,
The thing that I would have.

6 Mercy, good Lord, mercy I ask;
This is the total sum;

For mercy, Lord, is all my suit;
O! let thy mercy come.

HYMN LXXXVII.

Hope in the Covenant.

L. M.

1 HOW oft have sin and Satan strove, To rend my soul from thee, my God. But everlasting is thy love,

And Jesus seals it with his blood.

2 The oath and promise of the Lord

Join to confirm the wondrous grace; Eternal pow'r performs the word,

And fills all beav'n with endless praise. 3 Amidst temptations sharp and long, My soul to this dear refuge flies; Hope is my anchor, firm and strong, While tempests blow, and billows rise. 4 The gospel bears my spirit up; A faithful and unchanging God Lays the foundation of my hope In oaths, and promises, and blood.

HYMN LXXXVII.

C. M.

Godly Sorrow arising from the Sufferings of Christ. 1 ALAS! and did my Saviour bleed? And did my Sov'reign die? Would he devote that sacred head For such a worm as I?

as it for crimes that I had done
He groan'd upon the tree?
mazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,

When God, the mighty Maker, died
For man, the creature's, sin.

'bus might I hide my blushing face,
While his dear cross appears;
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes to tears.

But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away;
'Tis all that I can do.

HYMN LXXXIX.

C. M.

he Hope of Heaven our Support under Trials on Earth.
WHEN I can read my title clear
To mansions in the skies,

I bid farewell to ev'ry fear,
And wipe my weeping eyes.

Should earth against my soul engage,
And hellish darts be hurl'd,

Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

Ethiopia stretch her hands,
'he Saviour to embrace.

et thy banner be unfurl'd,
Where Satan holds his seat;
d all the kingdoms of the world,
ie prostrate at thy feet.

[blocks in formation]

Not ashamed of Christ.

'M not asham'd to own my Lord,
Or to defend his cause,
[aintain the honour of his word,
The glory of his cross.

esus, my God! I know his name,
His name is all my trust:
Nor will he put my soul to shame,
Nor let my hope be lost.

Firm as his throne his promise stands,
And he can well secure
What I've committed to his hands,
Till the decisive hour.

Then will he own my worthless name
Before his Father's face;
And in the new Jerusalem
Appoint my soul a place.
