4 Thy people and thy heritage,
Lord, bless, guide, and preserve;
Increase them, Lord, and rule their heart,
That they may never swerve.

[blocks in formation]

Praise to the God of the Elements.

1 YE princes that in might excel,
Your grateful sacrifice prepare;
God's glorious actions loudly tell,
His wondrous power to all declare.

2 'Tis he that with amazing noise

The wat❜ry clouds in sunder breaks;
The ocean trembles at his voice,

When he from heav'n in thunder speaks.

3 How full of pow'r his voice appears!

With what majestic terror crown'd! Which from their root tall cedars tears, And strews their scatter'd branches round.

4 God rules the angry floods on high,

His boundless sway shall never cease; His people he'll with strength supply,

And bless his own with constant peace.

[blocks in formation]

God's Chastisements gentle, and of short Durution.

1 SING praise, ye saints, that prove and see, The goodness of the Lord;

In honour of his majesty

Rejoice with one accord.

2 For why? His wrath is but a space,
And soon doth cease again;
But in his favour and his grace
Do life and joy remain.

3 Though heaviness, and trouble sore,
May tarry for a night;
The Lord to joy shall us restore,
Before the day be light.

[blocks in formation]

God's Providence, Mercy, Justice, and Grace.
1 WHATE'ER events betide,
Thy wisdom times them all;
Then, Lord, thy servant safely hide,
From those that seek his fall.

2 How great thy mercies are
To such as fear thy name!

Which thou, for those that trust thy care
Dost to the world proclaim.

3 0! all ye saints, the Lord With eager love pursue; Who to the just will help afford, And give the proud their due.

4 Ye that on God rely,

Courageously proceed;

For he will still your hearts supply
With strength in time of need.

PSALM XXXII.

FIRST VERSION.

L. M.

The Blessedness of the True Penitent. 1 HE's blest, whose sins have pardon gain'd No more in judgment to appear; Whose guilt remission has obtain❜d, And whose repentance is sincere.

2 No sooner I my wound disclos'd, The guilt that tortur'd me within, But thy forgiveness interpos'd,

And mercy's healing balm pour'd in.

3 True penitents shall thus succeed, Who seek thee while thou may'st be found;

These from the common deluge freed,

Sall see remorseless sinners drown'd.

[blocks in formation]

Repentance and free Pardon.

1 BLESS'D is the man, for ever bless'd Whose guilt is pardon'd by his God; Whose sins with sorrow are confess'd,

And cover'd with his Saviour's blood.

2 Bless'd is the man to whom the Lord Imputes not his iniquities;

He pleads no merit of reward,

And not on works, but grace, relies.

3 From guile his heart and lips are free;
His humble joy, his holy fear,
With deep repentance well agree,
And join to prove his faith sincere.

4 How glorious is that righteousness
That hides and cancels all his sins!
While a bright evidence of grace
Thro' his whole life appears and shines.

PSALM XXXIII.

PART FIRST.

C. M.

The Godly exhorted to Praise.

1 YE righteous, in the Lord rejoice : It is a seemly sight,

[graphic]

36

That upright men, with heart and voice,
Should praise the Lord of might.

2 Sing to the Lord a song most new;
With courage give him praise:
For why? His word is ever true,
His works, and all his ways.

3 Both judgment, equity, and right,
He ever lov'd, and will;

And with his gifts he doth delight
The earth throughout to fill.

4 Let all the earth, then, fear the Lord,
And keep his righteous law;
And all the world, with one accord.
For ever stand in awe.

PSALM XXXIII.

PART SECOND.

C. M.

1 OUR soul on God with patience waits, Our help and shield is he:

Then, Lord, let still our heart rejoice,
Because we trust in thee.

The riches of thy mercy, Lord,

Do thou to us extend;

Since we, for all we want or wish,
On thee alone depend.
