Nor let a Father's chast'ning prove
Like an avenger's sword.

2 My sins a heavy load appear,
And o'er my head are gone;
Too heavy they for me to bear,
Too hard for me t'atone.

3 All my desire to thee is known,
Thine eye counts ev'ry tear;
And ev'ry sigh and ev'ry groan
Is notic'd by thine ear.

4 Thou art my God, my only hope;
My God will hear my cry;
My God will bear my spirit up
When Satan bids me die.

PSALM XXXIX.

C. M.

The Frailty and Mortality of Man.

1 LORD, let me know my term of days, How soon my life will end;

The num'rous train of ills disclose,
Which this frail state attend.

2 Man like a shadow vainly walks,
With fruitless cares oppress'd;
He heaps up wealth, but cannot tell
By whom 'twill be possess'd.

Why should I then on worthless toys
With anxious care attend?
On thee alone my steadfast hope
Shall ever, Lord, depend.

Lord, hear my cry, accept my tears,
And listen to my pray❜r,
Who sojourn like a stranger here,
As all my fathers were.

5 O! spare me yet a little time,
My fainting soul restore,
Before I quite depart from hence,
And shall be seen no more.

Patient Waiting upon God.

1 I WAITED long, and sought the Lord,
And patiently did bear;
At length he did to me accord,
My voice and cry to hear.

2 He brought me from the dreadful pit
Out of the mire and clay;

Upon a rock he set my feet,
And he did guide my way.

3 To me he taught a psalm of praise,
Which I must shew abroad;

And sing new songs of thanks always
Unto the Lord our God.

4 When all the folk these things shall see,
As people much afraid,
Then they unto the Lord will flee,
And trust upon his aid.

The Incarnation and Sacrifice of Christ.
1 BEHOLD, the bless'd Redeemer comes,
Th' eternal Son appears!
And at th' appointed time assumes
The body God prepares.

2 Much he reveal'd his Father's grace,
And much his truth he shew'd,
And preach'd the way of righteousness
Where great assemblies stood.

3 His Father's honour touch'd his heart;
He pitied sinners' cries:
And, to fulfil a Saviour's part,

Was made a sacrifice.

4 No blood of beasts on altars shed,
Could wash the conscience clean;
But the rich sacrifice he paid
Atones for all our sin.

5 Then was the great salvation spread,
And Satan's kingdom shook;
Thus, by the woman's promis'd seed,
The serpent's head was broke.

PSALM XLI. C. M.

Charity to the Poor.
1 HAPPY the man whose tender care
Relieves the poor distress'd;
When he's by troubles compass'd round,
The Lord shall give him rest.

2 The Lord his life, with blessings crown'd
In safety shall prolong;
And disappoint the will of those
Who seek to do him wrong.

3 If he, in languishing estate,
Oppress'd with sickness lie;
The Lord will easy make his bed,
And inward strength supply.

4 Secure of this, to thee my God,
I thus my pray'r address'd;
"Lord, for thy mercy heal my soul,
"Though I have much transgress'd."

PSALM XLII. C. M.
