The holy one of Israel,
He is our guide and King.

PSALM LXXXIX.

SECOND VERSION.

The blessed Gospel.

C. M.

1 BLESS'Dare the souls that hear and know
The Gospel's joyful sound;
Peace shall attend the path they go,
And light their steps surround.

2 Their joy shall bear their spirits up,
Through their Redeemer's name;
His righteousness exalts their hope;
Nor Satan dares condemn,

3 The Lord, our glory and defence,
Strength and salvation gives :
Isr'el, thy King for ever reigns,
Thy God for ever lives.

[blocks in formation]

1 O LORD, the Saviour and defence,
Of all thy chosen race,

From age to age thou still hast been
Our sure abiding place..

2 Thou turnest man, O Lord, to dust,
Of which he first was made;

[graphic]

And when thou speak'st the word "Return" 'Tis instantly obey'd.

3 How soon our boasted strength decays,
To sorrow turn'd and pain!
How soon the slender thread is cut,
And we no more remain !

4 So teach us, Lord, th' uncertain sum
Of our short days to mind;
That to true wisdom all our hearts
May ever be inclin❜d.

PSALM XCI. P. M.

The Righteous safe under God's Protection.

1. HE that has God his guardian made,
Shall, under the Almighty's shade,
Secure and undisturb'd abide :
Thus to my soul of him I'll say,
"He is my fortress and my stay,
"My God, in whom I will confide."

2 His tender love and watchful care,
Shall free thee from the fowler's snare,
And from the noisome pestilence :
He over thee his wings shall spread,
And cover thy unguarded head:

His truth shall be thy strong defence.

A Psalm for the Lord's Day.

1 SWEET is the work, my God, my King,
To praise thy name, give thanks, and sing,
To shew thy love by morning light,
And talk of all thy truth at night.

2 Sweet is the day of sacred rest ;
No mortal care shall seize my breast;
O may my heart in tune be found,
Like David's harp of solemn sound.
3 My heart shall triumph in my Lord,
And bless his works, and bless his word;
Thy works of grace how bright they shine!
How deep thy counsels! how divine!
4 Then shall I share a glorious part,
When grace hath well refin'd my heart;
And fresh supplies of joy are shed,
Like holy oil, to cheer my head.

5 Sin (my worst enemy before)
Shall vex my eyes and ears no more;
My inward foes shall all be slain,
Nor Satan break my peace again.

6 Then shall I see, and hear, and know,
All I desir'd or wish'd below;

And ev'ry pow'r find sweet employ
In that eternal world of joy.

PSALM XCII. C. M.

SECOND VERSION.

The Pleasure of celebrating God's wondrous Works. 1 HOW good and pleasant must it be To thank the Lord most high;

And with repeated hymns of praise
His name to magnify.

2 With ev'ry morning's early dawn
His goodness to relate;
And of his constant truth, each night
The glad effects repeat.

3 How wondrous are thy works, O Lord,
How deep are thy decrees!
Whose winding tracts, in secret laid,
No stupid sinner sees.

4 He little thinks, when wicked men
Like grass look fresh and gay,

How soon their short-liv'd splendour must
For ever pass away.

5 But righteous men, like fruitful palms,
Shall make a glorious show;

As cedars, that on Lebanon,
In stately order grow.

PSALM XCIII.

L. M.

The Majesty, Eternity, Power, and Holiness of God. WITH glory clad, with strength array'd, The Lord, that o'er all nature reigns, The world's foundation strongly laid, And the vast fabric still sustains. How surely stablish'd is thy throne,

2

Which shall no change or period see;
For thou, O Lord, and thou alone,
Art God from all eternity.

The floods, O Lord, lift up their voice,
And toss the troubled waves on high;
But God above can still their noise,
And make the angry sea comply.
Thy promise, Lord, is ever sure,
And they that in thy house do dwell,
That happy station to secure,
Must still in holiness excel.

PSALM XCIV. C. M.
God's Chastisements a Blessing to his People.
BLESS'D is the man, whom thou,
In kindness dost chastise;
And by thy sacred rules to walk
Dost lovingly advise.

O Lord,
