Thefe are the Sons of Shem by their Families, their Tongues, their Poffeffions, their Kindreds. These are the Families of the Sons of Noah, by whom the Earth was divided after the Flood to the respective Kindreds and Nations.

LL the Inhabitants of the Earth had then one Worship only, and one Intereft. As they travelled from the East, they found a Valley in the Land of Shinar ; and there they stopt. And each one faid to his Neighbour, Come, let us make Brick, and burn it thoroughly (they had Brick in place of Stone, and Slime inftead of Mortar); Come, let us build a City and a Temple with a Summit facred to the Names: Let us do this for our felves there, that we may be no more difperfed over the Surface of the Earth. This is Profanation which they are a doing: Nor fhall any other wicked Defign be defeated, which they will hereafter contrive. Come, let us defcend, and there confound their Worship fo, as that no Man may hear, or be prefent at his Neighbour's Worship. Thus Jehovah diffipated them from thence all over the Surface of the Earth; fo they defifted from building the City: Wherefore the Name of it was Babel, because there Jehovah confounded the Worship of the Inhabitants of the Earth.

Thefe are the Hiftories of Shem, who was one hundred Years old when he begot Arphacfhad: He begot Arphacfhad two Years after the Flood. Shem lived after he begot Arphacfhad five hundred Years, and begot Sons and Daughters. Arphacfhad lived thirty-five Years, and begot Selah. After he begot Selah he lived four hundred and three Years, and begot Sons and Daughters,

Selah lived thirty Years and begot Heber. And after he begot Heber, he lived four hundred and three Years, and begot Sons and Daughters.

But Haran died before his Father Terah in Ur of the Chaldees. Abram and Nahor took to themfelves Wives: The Name of Abram's Wife, was Sarai; and that of Nabor's, Milcah; fhe was the Daughter of Haran, who was also the Father of Ifcah: Sarai was barren, fhe had no Child. Now Terah took Abram his Son, and Lot the Son of Haran, his Son's Son, and Sarai his Daughter-in-Law, his Son Abram's Wife, and they all came out together from Ur of the Chaldees, that they might go into the Land of Canaan; fo they arrived at Haran, and dwelt there. The Days of Terah were two hundred and five Years: He died in Haran.
