and digged another Well; for which they did not contend: So he called it's Name Rehoboth (or Breadth); for now, faid he, Jehovah has fpread us abroad, and made us fruitful upon the Earth. From thence he went up to Baar-fhebah; in which Night Jehovah appeared to him, and faid, I am the Gods of Abraham your Father; fear not, for I am with you, and will bless you, and cause your Pofterity to encrease upon account of Abraham my Servant. So he there built an Altar, and there invoked the Name Jehovah : He alfo there set down his Tent; and there his Servants digged a Well. Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, with a Company of his Friends, and Phicol, Captain of his Army. But Ifaac faid to them, Wherefore come you hither? You hate me, and fent me from among you. And they anfwered, We have seeing feen that Jehovah is with you; fo we defire that there be a Confederacy betwixt and us, and let us make a Covenant together; that you do us no Evil, as we did no Violence to you, but have always done you only Good, and fent you away in Peace. Now bleffed be Jehovah! He made a Feast for them, and they did eat and drink, and rofe early in the Morning: They then gave Affurances each to the other; fo Ifaac fent them away, and in Peace they went away from him. OW when Isaac was old, and his Eye-fight failed, he called Efau his biggest Son, and faid, My Son : He anfwered, Here I am. So he faid to him, Now I am old, and know not the Day of my Death: Take, I entreat you, your Weapons, your Bow, and Arrows, and go out to the Field, and hunt for Venifon to me. Then prepare for me delicious Victuals, fuch as I love, bring it to me, that I may eat, that my Soul

before I die. Rebekah heard what Ifaac faid to Efau his Son, who went into the Field to hunt for Venifon, that he might bring it. So fhe thus fpoke to Jacob her Son; I heard your Father thus fpeak to Efau your Brother, Bring me Venison, and make to me of it delicious Victuals, that I may eat of it, and bless you in Prefence of Jehovah before I die. Now, my Son, hearken to my Advice, as I fhall now direct you. Go to the Flock, and take from thence two good healthy Kids, that I may make of them delicate Victuals for your Father, fuch as he loves; then it to you fhall fhall carry your Father, that he may eat of it, and jo bless you before his Death. But Jacob thus anfwered Rebekah his Mother; Efau is a hairy Man, but I am fmooth: Perhaps my Father will touch me, and I fhall be looked upon as an Impoftor; whereby I shall bring upon my Jelf Contempt, but not a Bleffing. His Mother thus anfwered; Upon me the Contempt falls, my Son; you only obferve my Directions: Go therefore, and bring to me. So he went, and took, and brought them to his Mother, who prepared delicious Food, fuch as his Father loved. She alfo took of the most gay of her biggest Son Efau's Cloaths, and therewith dreffed her leffer Son Jacob; at the fame Time covering his Hands, and the fmooth, Part of his Neck, with the Skins of the Kids: After

After which the put the delicious Food, and the Bread which she had baked, into the Hands of Jacob her Son; who then brought it to his Father, and faid, My Father: He answered, Here I am; who are you? Are you my Son? Then Jacob faid to his Father, I am Efau your First-born; I have done as you defired me: Arife, I entreat you, fit and eat of my Venison, that your Soul may bless me. Now Ifaac replies, By what Means did you find it fo fpeedily, my Son? He then faid, Jehovah your Gods brought it before me, or into my Way. Then Ifaac faid, Come nigh me, my Son, that I may feel you Are you truly my Son Efau, or not? So Jacob came nigh to Ifaac his Father, and he touched him, and faid, The Voice refembles Jacob's Voice, but the Hands are like thofe of Efau : So he did not discern him, because the Hands were hairy, like those of Efau his Brother, and therefore bleffed him. He faid, Are you truly my Son Efau? He answered, I am. faid, Bring it nigh to me, that I may eat of my Son's Venifon, and my Soul fhall blefs you. So he brought it nigh to him, and he did eat; he alfo brought him Wine, whereof he drank. Then his Father Ifaac, faid, Approach, and kifs me: So he came nigher; and while he kiffed him, he smelled the Smell of his Cloaths, and faid, Obferve the Smell of my Son, which refembles M

the Smell of a Field that Jehovah has bleffed. May the Gods give you of the Dew of the Founders, and the Fat of the Earth, and Abundance of Wine and Corn. May People ferve you, and Nations bow themselves before you. Be you Governor of your Brethren: Your Mother's Pofterity fhall bow themselves before you. Despised shall he be who defpifes you; and blessed shall he be who bleffes you. Now as foon as Ifaac had ceased from bleffing Jacob, and he had gone from his Father's Prefence, Efau came from hunting. He alfo prepared delicious Food, and brought it to his Father, and faid, Father, arife, and eat of your Son's Venison, that your Soul may bless me.

Then

Ifaac his Father faid, Who are you? He anfwered, I am your Firft-born Son Efau. Now Ifaac did shake very much with a ftrong Fit of Trembling, and faid, Where is he who took Venifon, and brought it to me, of which I have eaten before you came, and bleffed him: In Truth be fhall be bleffed by Jehovah. When Efau heard his Father's Words, he cried loudly and lamented, and faid, Bless me alfo, my Father: Who answered, Your Brother came. deceitfully, and took away your + Bleffing. Then he (viz. Efau) faid, Is he not properly called Jacob, for he has twice flung me? He
