And to the height on which I stand,
Nor storms nor clouds can rise.

4 O, this is life! O, this is joy!
My God, to find Thee so!

Thy face to see; Thy voice to hear;
And all Thy love to know!

229.

"Blessed are the Poor in Spirit." C.M.

OUR Father, hear our longing prayer,
And help this prayer to flow:

That lowly thoughts which are Thy care
Within our souls may grow.

2 For humble hearts shall understand
The peace, the calm delight,
Of dwelling in Thy heavenly land,
A pleasure in Thy sight.

3 Give us humility; that so

Thy reign may come within,

And when Thy children homeward go,
We too may enter in.

4 Hear us, our Saviour; ours Thou art,
Though we are not like Thee:

Make us so large in soul and heart
That lowly we shall be.

230. "Blessed are they that Mourn." C.M.

1 LE ET Thy own voice, O Father, say

What we have been to Thee;

How we have wandered far away,
And yet have welcome free;

2 Then shall reviving love be seen;
Sad tears our grief will prove,

That such our Father's grace hath been,
And such His children's love.

3 These thoughts of grief would yet embrace A joy amidst their pain;

For we should know the wandering race
Was journeying home again.

4 Give us this mourning and delight,—
Thy voice the truth can show;

Such grief and joy would urge with might
Upon the road we go.

'Hunger and Thirst after
Righteousness."

1 IF we were longing for the food
That high in heaven doth grow;
If we were thirsting for the flood
That from the rock doth flow;

2 Then boldly should we come to Thee,
To plead for that we want,-
For in our souls desire would be
An earnest of the grant.

3 But when Thou rainest from the skies,
Earth's fountains gush amain:

Like gushing founts our prayers arise,
Thy promise is the rain.

4 Our souls are empty vessels laid
For Thee to fill and bless ;

C.M.

For hungering and for thirsting made,
Till filled with righteousness.

Praise for Pardon.

MY God a God of pardon is,

His bosom gives me ease;

I do not truly serve my God
Yet mercy doth Him please.

2 My sins have reached up to the heavens,
But mercy's height exceeds;

God's mercy is above the heavens,
Above my sinful deeds.

3 My sins are many like the stars,
Or sands upon the shore;
And yet the mercies of my God
Are infinitely more.

4 My sins in bigness do arise,

Like mountains great and tall; But mercy, like a mighty sea, Covers these mountains all.

5 The Father's wrath they need not fear
Who once have felt His love,

And they who walk with God below,
Shall dwell with God above.

C.M.

6 Rage earth and hell; come life, come death; Yet still my song shall be—

God was and is and will be good,
And merciful to me.

Docility and Trust.

QUIET, Lord, my froward heart,

Make me teachable and mild;
Upright, simple, free from art,
Make me as a little child;

From distrust and envy free,
Pleased with all that pleaseth Thee.
2 What Thou shalt to-day provide,
Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to Thy wisdom leave:
'Tis enough that Thou wilt care;
Why should I the burden bear?
3 As a little child relies

234.

On a care beyond his own;
Knows he's neither strong nor wise;
Fears to stir a step alone;
Let me thus with Thee abide,
As my Father, Guard, and Guide.

Faith and Hope.

1 BEGONE unbelief!

My Saviour is near,
And for my relief

Will surely appear;
By prayer let us wrestle,
And He will perform;
With Christ in the vessel,
I smile at the storm,

104th M.

2 Though dark be my way,
Since He is my guide,
'Tis mine to obey,
'Tis His to provide;
Though cisterns be broken,
And creatures all fail,
The word He has spoken,
Shall surely prevail.

3 His love, in times past,
Forbids me to think,

He'll leave me at last
In trouble to sink;
Each sweet Ebenezer
I have in review,
Confirms his good pleasure
To help me quite through.

4 Since all that I meet
Shall work for my good,
The bitter is sweet,

The medicine is food;
Tho' painful at present,
'Twill cease before long;
And then, O how pleasant
The conqueror's song!

Mysteries and Mercies of
Providence.

moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
