2 Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up His bright designs,
And works His sovereign will.

3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take ;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

5 His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

236.

Nearer to Thee.

1 NEARER, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

E'en though it be a cross
That raiseth me;

Still all my song shall be,-
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

P.M.

2 Though, like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

3 There let the way appear,
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou sendest me,
In mercy given ;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

4 Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

5 Or if on joyful wing
Cleaving the sky,

Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
Upward I fly;

Still all my song shall be,--
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

Penitent Cries Answered.

C.M.

COME

let us to the Lord our God With contrite hearts return; Our God is gracious, nor will leave

The desolate to mourn.

2 His voice commands the tempest forth,
And stills the stormy wave;
And tho' His arm be strong to smite,
'Tis also strong to save.

3 Long hath the night of terror reigned,
The dawn shall bring us light;
God shall appear, and we shall rise
With gladness in His sight.

4 Our hearts, if God we seek to know,
Shall know Him, and rejoice;
His coming like the morn shall be,
Like morning songs His voice.

5 As dew upon the tender herb,
Diffusing fragrance round;

As showers that usher in the spring,
And cheer the thirsty ground;

6 So shall His presence bless our souls,
And shed a joyful light;

That hallowed morn shall chase away
The sorrows of the night.

238. The Wanderer Invited Home.

1 RETURN, O wanderer, to thy home,
Thy Father calls for thee;

No longer now an exile roam,
In guilt and misery:
Return! return!

2 Return, O wanderer, to thy home,
'Tis Jesus calls for thee:

The Spirit and the bride say, Come;
O then, for refuge flee :

Return! return!

3 Return, O wanderer, to thy home,
"Tis madness to delay;

There are no pardons in the tomb,
And brief is mercy's day:

239.

Return return!

66

Thy Will be Done."

MY God, my Father, while I stray,

P.M.

P.M.

Far from my home, on life's rough way, O teach me from my heart to say,

"Thy will be done."

2 If Thou shouldst call me to resign
What most I prize :-it ne'er was mine;
I only yield Thee what is Thine;

66 'Thy will be done."
3 If but my fainting heart be blest
With Thy sweet Spirit for its guest,
My God, to Thee I leave the rest :

66

Thy will be done."

4 Renew my will from day to day; Blend it with Thine, and take away All that now makes it hard to say,

"Thy will be done."

5 Then when on earth I breathe no more,
The prayer oft mixed with tears before,
I'll sing upon a happier shore,-

"Thy will be done."

Subjection to God.

112th.

THOU that sitt'st in heaven, and see'st My deeds without, my thoughts within; Be Thou my Prince, be Thou my Priest; Command my soul, and cure my sin : How bitter my afflictions be

I care not, so I rise to Thee.

2 What I possess, or what I crave,
Brings no content, great God, to me,
If what I would, or what I have,
Be not possessed and blest in Thee:
What I enjoy,-O make it mine
In making me that have it-Thine.

3 When winter-fortunes cloud the brows

Of summer friends; when eyes grow strange;
When plighted faith forgets its vows;
When earth and all things in it change;-
O Lord! Thy mercies fail me never;
Where once Thou lov'st, Thou lov'st for ever.
