4 Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
Would God I were with thee! O that my sorrows had an end: Thy joys that I might see!
5 Thy walls are made of precious stone, Thy bulwarks diamond square; Thy gates are made of orient pearl; Ŏ God, if I were there!
6 0 my sweet home, Jerusalem! Thy joys when shall I see?
The King that sitteth on the throne, And thy felicity?
7 Thy gardens and thy goodly walks Continually are green,
Where grow such sweet and lovely flowers As nowhere else are seen.
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Thy joys fain would I see; Come quickly, Lord, and end my griefs, And take me home to Thee.
9 O, in my forehead plant Thy name, And take me hence away; That I may dwell with Thee in bliss, And sing Thy praise for aye.
10 O, mother dear, Jerusalem! When shall I come to thee?
When shall my sorrows have an end? Thy joys when shall I see?
VIII. TEACHERS' MEETINGS.
Working God's Will.
TEACH me, my God and King, In all things Thee to see: And what I do in anything, To do it as for Thee!
2 To scorn the senses' sway, While still to Thee I tend : In all I do, be Thou the way, In all, be Thou the end,
3 All may of Thee partake : Nothing so small can be,
But draws, when acted for Thy sake, Greatness and worth from Thee.
4 If done beneath Thy laws,
E'en servile labours shine; Hallowed is toil, if this the cause; The meanest work, divine.
The Active Christian.
YE servants of the Lord,
Each in his office wait, Observant of His heavenly word, And watchful at His gate.
2 Let all your lamps be bright, And trim the golden flame; Gird up your loins as in His sight, For awful is His name.
3 Watch, 'tis your Lord's command And while we speak He's near; Mark the first signal of His hand, And ready all appear. 4 O happy servant he,
In such a posture found!
He shall his Lord with rapture see, And be with honour crowned. 5 Christ shall the banquet spread, With His own royal hand,
And raise that favourite servant's head, Amidst the angelic band.
Prayer for Scholars.
GREAT God, with heart and tongue,
For all our youth we pray;
O, may they learn, while they are young, To walk in wisdom's way.
2 Now in their early days
Teach them Thy will to know; Thy Spirit's sanctifying grace, Betimes on them bestow. 3 Their hearts, to folly prone, Renew, by power divine; Unite them to Thyself alone, And make them wholly Thine.
4 Make their defenceless youth The object of Thy care;
Help them to chose the way of truth, And flee from every snare.
5 0 let Thy word of grace
Their warmest thoughts employ; Be this, through all their future days, Their treasure and their joy.
God of love and mercy hear, Our grateful vows, our fervent prayer; And with Thy choicest favours bless; And own as Thine the rising race!
2 Incline their hearts to learn Thy will, Their opening minds with knowledge fill; Impress Thine image on their breast, And guide them to eternal rest.
Sowing and Reaping.
1 Sow in the morn thy seed,
At eve hold not thy hand;
To doubt and fear give thou no heed, Broadcast it o'er the land.
2 Beside all waters sow,
The highway furrows stock,
Drop it where thorns and thistles grow, Scatter it on the rock.
3 The good the fruitful ground, Expect not here, nor there:
O'er hill and dale, by plots, 'tis found; Go forth, then, everywhere.
4 Thou know'st not which may thrive, The late or early sown;
Grace keeps the precious germs alive When and wherever strown.
5 And duly shall appear,
In verdure, beauty, strength, The tender blade, the stalk, the ear, And the full corn at length.
6 Thou canst not toil in vain ; Cold, heat, and moist and dry, Shall foster and mature the grain For garners in the sky.
7 Thence, when the glorious end, The day of God is come,
The angel-reapers shall descend, And heaven cry, "Harvest-home '
283. Children commended to Christ. L.M. GREAT Saviour! who didst condescend
Young children in Thine arms to take, Still prove thyself the children's Friend, And save them for Thy mercy's sake. 2 As seed that's sown in fruitful ground, Let the instruction they receive, To Thine immortal praise abound, And make them to Thy glory live. 3 Whilst in the slippery paths of youth, Be Thou their guardian and their guide, That they directed by the truth, May never from Thy precepts slide.
