2 What though the embattled legions
Of earth and hell combine?
His power throughout their regions
Shall soon resplendent shine;
Ride on, O Lord! victorious,
Immanuel, Prince of peace!
Thy triumph shall be glorious,
Thine empire shall increase.

3 Yes, thou shalt reign for ever,
O Jesus, King of kings!
Thy light, thy love, thy favor,
Each ransomed captive sings;
The isles for thee are waiting,
The deserts learn thy praise,
The hills and valleys greeting,
The song responsive raise.

Thos. Hastings (1784-1872.)

Awake, arm of the Lord.

1 ARM of the Lord! awake, awake;
Put on thy strength, the nations shake;
And let the world, adoring, see

Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.

2 Say to the heathen, from thy throne,
'I am Jehovah-God alone!"

Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.

3 No more let human blood be spilt,
Vain sacrifice for human guilt;
But to each conscience be applied

The blood that flowed from Jesus' side.

L. M.

4 Almighty God! thy grace proclaim In every clime, of every name,

Till adverse powers before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour-Lord of all.
Wm. Shrubsole (1759-1829.)

Prayer for the Jews.

L. M.

1 DISOWNED of heaven, by man oppressed, Outcasts from Sion's hallowed ground, Oh! why should Israel's sons, once blessed, Still roam the scorning world around?

2 Lord, visit thy forsaken race,

Back to thy fold the wanderers bring; Teach them to seek thy slighted grace, And hail in Christ their promised King.

3 The veil of darkness rend in twain

Which hides their Shiloh's glorious light; The severed olive branch again

Firm to its parent stock unite.

4 Hail, glorious day, expected long, When Jew and Greek one prayer shall

pour,

With eager feet one people throng,

With grateful praise one God adore.

[blocks in formation]

1 O SPIRIT of the living God,

In all thy plenitude of grace,

Where'er the foot of man hath trod,
Descend on our apostate race!

Anon.

L. M.

2 Give tongues of fire and hearts of love
To preach the reconciling word;
Give power and unction from above
Whene'er the joyful sound is heard.

3 Be darkness, at thy coming, light;
Confusion, order in thy path;

Souls without strength inspire with might; Bid mercy triumph over wrath.

4 O Spirit of the Lord, prepare

All the round earth her God to meet; Breathe thou abroad like morning air, Till hearts of stone begin to beat.

5 Baptize the nations far and nigh; The triumphs of the cross record; The name of Jesus glorify

Till every kindred call him Lord.

Rev. James Montgomery (1771-1854.)

Doxology.

L. M.

PRAISE God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Bp. Thomas Ken (1637-1711.)

Early piety.

1 By cool Siloam's shady rill,

How sweet the lily grows;

How sweet the breath beneath the hill

Of Sharon's dewy rose.

C. M.

2 And such the child whose early feet The paths of peace have trod;

Whose secret heart, with influence sweet, Is upward drawn to God.

3 By cool Siloam's shady rill

The lily must decay:

The rose that blooms beneath the hill
Must shortly fade away.

4 And soon, too soon, the wintry hour,
Of man's maturer age,

May shake the soul with sorrow's power,
And stormy passion's rage.

5 O thou, whose infancy was found
With heavenly ray to shine,
Whose years, with changeless virtue

crowned,

Were all alike divine;

6 Dependent on thy bounteous breath,.
We seek thy grace alone,

In childhood, manhood, and in death,
To keep us still thy own.

556

Bp. Reg. Heber (1783-1826.)

Children dedicated.

1 Now let the children of the saints
Be dedicate to God

Pour out thy Spirit on them, Lord,
And wash them in thy blood.

2 Thus to the parents and their seed
Shall thy salvation come;

C. M.

And numerous households meet at last
In one eternal home.

Rev. P. Doddridge (1702-1751.)

Prayer for the children of the church.

L. M.

1 DEAR Saviour, if these lambs should stray From thy secure enclosure's bound, And, lured by worldly joys away,

Among the thoughtless crowd be found. 2 Remember still that they are thine,

That thy dear, sacred name they bear; Think that the seal of love divine, The sign of covenant grace, they wear. 3 In all their erring, sinful years,

Oh! let them ne'er forgotten be; Remember all the prayers and tears Which made them consecrate to thee. 4 And when these lips no more can pray, These eyes can weep for them no more, Turn thou their feet from folly's way, The wanderers to thy fold restore.

Mrs. Abby Beadley Hyde (-1872.)

Of such is the kingdom of God. 8s, 7s & 6s.

1 THERE'S a home for little children,
Above the bright blue sky,
Where Jesus reigns in glory;
A home of peace and joy;
No home on earth is like it,
Or can with it compare,
For every one is happy,

Nor could be happier, there.

2 There's a song for little children,
Above the bright blue sky,

A song that will not weary,
Though sung continually;
