3 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, Odours of Edom, and off'rings divine?

Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the

ocean,

Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation;

Vainly with gold would his favour secure: Richer by far is the heart's adoration;

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 5[Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid!

Star of the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!]

The Star of Bethlehem.

Rev. xxii, 16.

L. M.

1 WHEN, marshall'd on the nightly plain,
The glittering host bestud the sky;
One Star alone, of all the train,
Can fix the sinner's wand'ring eye.

2 Hark! hark! to God the chorus breaks,
From ev'ry host, from ev'ry gem;
But one alone the Saviour speaks-
It is the Star of Bethlehem.

.

3 Once on the raging sea I rode,

The storm was loud, the night was dark; The ocean yawn'd, and rudely blow'd The wind that toss'd my found'ring bark. 4 Deep horror then my vitals froze; Death-struck, I ceas'd the tide to stem; When suddenly a Star arose

It was the Star of Bethlehem.

5 It was my guide, my light, my all;
It bade my dark forebodings cease,
And, thro' the storm and danger's thrall,
It led me to the port of peace.

6 Now safely moor'd, my perils o'er,
I'll sing first in night's diadem-
For ever and for evermore,

The Star-the Star of Bethlehem!

The Gentiles fellow-heirs.

Eph. ii, 13; iii, 4-6.

1 HAIL, Thou Source of every blessing,
Sov'reign Father of mankind;
Gentiles now, thy grace possessing,
In thy courts admission find:
Grateful now we fall before Thee,
In thy church obtain a place;
Now by faith behold thy glory,
Praise thy truth, adore thy grace.

8.7.

2 Once far off, but now invited,
We approach thy sacred throne;
In thy covenant united,

Reconcil'd, redeem'd, made one:
Now, reveal'd to eastern sages,
See the star of mercy shine;
Myst'ry hid in former ages,
Myst'ry great of love divine.

3 Hail, Thou all-inviting Saviour!
Gentiles now their off'rings bring;
In thy temple seek thy favour,
Jesus Christ our Lord and King:
May we, body, soul, and spirit,
Live devoted to thy praise;
Glorious realms of bliss inherit;
Grateful anthems ever raise.

1st Sunday after Epiphany.

Jacob's Star.

Num. xxiv, 17. Job xxxviii, 7.

1 SONS of men, behold from far,
Hail the long-expected Star;
Jacob's Star, that guides the night,
Guides bewilder'd nature right.

7's.

Epiphany.

2 Mild it shines on all beneath,

Piercing through the shades of death,
Scatt'ring error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.

3 Nations all, remote and near,
Haste to see your God appear;
Haste, for Him your hearts prepare,
Meet Him manifested there.

4 Sing, ye morning stars, again,
God descends to dwell with men;
Let his praise your hearts employ,
Shout, ye sons of God, for joy.

The year of Jubilee.

Lev. XXV, 8, 9. Isa. xxvii, 13; lxi, 1, 2.

BLOW ye the trumpet, blow,

The gladly solemn sound!

Let all the nations know

To earth's remotest bound,
The year of Jubilee is come;
Return, ye ransom'd sinners, home!

Extol the Lamb of God,

The sin-atoning Lamb:

Redemption by his blood

148th.

Through all the world proclaim:
The year &c.

[blocks in formation]

Epiphany.

Ye slaves of sin and hell,
Your liberty receive;
And safe in Jesus dwell,
And blest in Jesus live:
The year &c.

Jesus, our great High Priest,
Has full atonement made:
Ye weary spirits, rest;

Ye mourning souls, be glad:
The year &c.

God's mercies unceasing.

Ps. xxiii, 6; lxxi, 5-9. Isa. xlvi, 4.

1 WHEN all thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,

Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise.

2 Unnumber'd comforts to my soul
Thy tender care bestow'd,

Long ere my infant heart could tell

From whom those comforts flow'd.

3 [When in the slipp'ry paths of youth
With heedless steps I ran,

Thine arm unseen convey'd me safe,
And led me on to man.]
