5 Why restless, why cast down, my soul?
Hope still, and thou shalt sing
The praise of Him who is thy God,
Thy health's eternal spring.

The triumph of Christ.

1 MY HEART its noblest theme has found;
O Thou! with royal splendour crown'd,
Messiah taught thy power to know,
How shall my mouth with praise o'erflow!
2 Hail! fairer than the sons of men ;
Grace on thy lips, and beauty reign,
That speak Thee honour'd from above,
And bless'd with God's eternal love.

3 Hail! Thou whom nations own their Lord, Gird on thy thigh thy conqu'ring sword; By mercy, truth, and justice led,

Ride glorious on, thy conquests spread.

4 The Lord thy God, who form'd the skies,
Has o'er thy fellows bid Thee rise;
And, pleas'd, the Spirit's influence shed,
The oil of gladness, o'er thy head.

God our refuge.

1 GOD is our refuge in distress,

A present help when dangers press;
In Him undaunted we'll confide:

Though earth were from her centre tost,
And mountains in the ocean lost,
Uprooted by the roaring tide.

2 A gentle stream with gladness still
The city of our Lord shall fill,

The royal seat of God most high:
God dwells in Zion, whose fair towers
Shall mock th' assaults of earthly powers,
While his almighty aid is nigh.

3 Submit to God's almighty sway,
For Him the heathen shall obey,
And earth her sov'reign Lord confess :
The God of hosts conducts our arms,
Our tower of refuge in alarms,
As to our fathers in distress.

God present in his house.
GREAT is the Lord our God,
And let his praise be great;
He makes his churches his abode,
His most delightful seat.

These temples of his grace,
How beautiful they stand!
The honours of our native place,
And bulwarks of our land.

In Zion God is known

A refuge in distress;

How bright has his salvation shone

Through all her palaces!

In every new distress

We'll to his house repair;

We'll think upon his wondrous grace,

And seek deliv'rance there.

The God we worship now
Will guard us till we die;

Will be our God while here below,
And ours above the sky.

FIRST VERSION.

Confession.

HAVE mercy, Lord, on me,

As Thou wert ever kind;

Let me, opprest with loads of guilt,
Thy wonted mercy find.

Wash off my foul offence,
And cleanse me from my sin;
For I confess my crime, and see
How great my guilt has been.

3 [In guilt each part was form'd
Of all this sinful frame;

5

In guilt I was conceiv'd, and born
The heir of sin and shame.]

Blot out my crying sins,
Nor me in anger view;
Create in me a heart that's clean,
An upright mind renew.

Withdraw not Thou thy help,
Nor cast me from thy sight;
Nor let thy Holy Spirit take
His everlasting flight.

6 [The joy thy favour gives
Let me again obtain;

And thy free Spirit's firm support
My fainting soul sustain.]

SECOND VERSION.

Confession.

1 SHOW pity, Lord; O Lord, forgive;
Let a repenting rebel live:

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not a sinner trust in Thee?

2 My crimes, tho' great, do not surpass
The power and glory of thy grace:
Great God, thy nature hath no bound;
So let thy pard'ning love be found.

L.M.

3 O wash my soul from every sin,
And make my guilty conscience clean;
Here on my heart the burden lies,
And past offences grieve mine eyes.
4 My lips with shame my sins confess,
Against thy law, against thy grace:
Lord, should thy judgment grow severe,
I am condemn'd, but Thou art clear.
5 Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hov'ring round thy word,
Would light on some sweet promise there,
Some sure support against despair.

THIRD VERSION.

Need of the Atonement.

1 LORD, we are vile, conceiv'd in sin,
And born unholy and unclean;

Sprung from the man, whose guilty fall
Corrupts the race, and taints us all.

2 Soon as we draw our infant breath,
The seeds of sin grow up for death;
Thy law demands a perfect heart,
But we're defil'd in every part.

3 Behold we fall before thy face;
Our only refuge is thy grace:

No outward forms can make us clean;
The leprosy lies deep within.
