Whitsun week.

8. 7.

Prayer for the Spirit.

Matt. iii, 11. Acts ix, 3. 1 John ii, 20.

1 HOLY Ghost, whose fire celestial
Light and life divine imparts!
Come, and dwell in breasts terrestrial;
Heaven reveal in earthly hearts:
Come and pour, in blest effusion,
Heavenly unction from above;
Scatt'ring wide, in rich diffusion,
Comfort, light, and fire of love.

2 Keep thy church in holy union;
Foes remove; give peace at home;
Source of love and sweet communion!
Where Thou dwell'st, no ill can come:
Teach us humbly to adore Thee,
While on earth we pass our days;
Then transport our souls to glory,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Whitsun week.

The work of the Spirit.

John xvi, 8.

COME, Holy Spirit! come;

Let thy bright beams arise;
Dispel all sorrow from our minds,
All darkness from our eyes.

Convince us all of sin;
Then lead to Jesu's blood;
And to our wond'ring view reveal
The boundless love of God.

Revive our drooping faith;
Our doubts and fears remove;

And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.

"Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,

To pour fresh life on every part,
And new-create the whole.

Dwell Thou within our breast;
Our minds from bondage free;

S. M.

So shall we know, and praise, and love,
The Father, Son, and Thee.

Whitsun week.

6-8's.

Praise to the Saviour.

John xvi, 14. Eph. ii, 13.

1 COME, Holy Spirit! from above,
Eternal Source of heavenly love!
Our hearts attune, our tongues inspire,
That we may emulate the choir,
That without ceasing hymn his praise-
The Ancient of eternal days.

2 Lo! when we lay in guilt and sin,
Deform'd without, defil'd within,

From heaven He look'd with pitying eye,
From heaven He came to bring us nigh,
And through the merit of his blood
To give us free access to God.

3 To Thee, Thou bleeding Lamb! to Thee,
For pardon, peace, and life we flee;
The shelter of thy cross we claim;
Thy righteousness alone we name:
Now at thy feet we suppliant fall,
Our Lord, our Life, our All in all.
4[Hosannas, then, to Christ be rais'd!
For ever be the Saviour prais'd!
Be honour, power, and glory given,
By all on earth, and all in heaven!
For He is worthy to receive

More praise than heaven and earth can give.]

Let there be light.

Gen. i, 2, 3. 2 Cor. iv, 6.

1 THOU, whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard,
And took their flight,
Hear us, we humbly pray;
And, where the gospel-day
Sheds not its glorious ray,
Let there be light!

2 Thou, who didst come to bring
On thy redeeming wing
Healing and sight,

Health to the sick in mind,
Sight to the inly blind,

Oh! now to all mankind
Let there be light!

3 Spirit of truth and love,
Life-giving, holy Dove,
Speed forth thy flight;
Move o'er the water's face,
Bearing the lamp of grace,
And in earth's darkest place
Let there be light!

4 Blessed and Holy Three,
Glorious Trinity,

Wisdom, Love, Might,
Boundless as ocean's tide
Rolling in fullest pride,
O'er the world, far and wide,
Let there be light!

Prayer to the Triune Jehovah.
Eph. ii, 18.

L. M.

1 FATHER of heaven! whose love profound
A ransom for our souls hath found,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy pard'ning love extend.
2 Almighty Son! Incarnate Word!
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy saving grace extend.
3 Eternal Spirit! by whose breath
The soul is rais'd from sin and death,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy quick'ning pow'r extend.
4 Jehovah!-Father! Spirit! Son!-
Mysterious Godhead! Three in One!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
Grace, pardon, life, to us extend.
