From mountain, nor from valley, Shall help to thee be giv'n; Thy hope is in Jehovah,
Who made the earth and heav'n.
2 Thy foot shall never stumble, For He thy way shall keep; His loving eye beholds thee; It hath no need of sleep: Thy keeper ne'er shall slumber, So be not thou afraid; His presence is around thee
For solace and for shade.
3 The fierce sun shall not smite thee At burning noon of day, The moon shall not affright thee With pale deceiving ray: In thy coming and thy going Shall evil harm thee never, Jehovah is thy keeper
FIRST VERSION.
Public worship.
1 How did my heart rejoice to hear
My friends devoutly say—
In Zion let us all appear, And keep the solemn day!
2 I love her gates, I love the road; The church, adorn'd with grace, Stands like a palace built for God To show his milder face.
3 Peace be within this sacred place, And joy a constant guest!
With holy gifts and heavenly grace Be her attendants blest!
4 My soul shall pray for Zion still, While life or breath remains :
There my best friends, my kindred, dwell; There God my Saviour reigns.
SECOND VERSION.
Public worship.
1 THE festal morn, my God! is come, That calls me to thy honour'd dome, Thy presence to adore;
My feet the summons shall attend, With willing step thy courts ascend, And tread the hallow'd floor.
2 E'en now to our transported eyes Fair Zion's towers in prospect rise; Within her gates we stand; And, lost in wonder and delight, Behold her happy sons unite In friendship's firmest band.
3 Hither, from earth's remotest end, Lo! the redeem'd of God ascend; Their off'rings hither bring; Here, eager to attest their joy,
In hymns of praise their tongues employ, And hail th' immortal King.
4 Be peace by each implor'd on thee, O Salem, while with bended knee To Israel's God we pray!
How blest, who calls himself thy friend! Success his labour shall attend, And safety guard his way.
1 FROM lowest depths of woe, To God I send my cry: Lord! hear my supplicating voice, And graciously reply.
2 Should'st Thou severely judge, Who could the trial bear? But Thou forgiv'st, lest we despond, And quite renounce thy fear.
3 My soul with patience waits For Thee, the living Lord :
My hopes are on thy promise built, Thy never-failing word
4 Let Israel trust in God; No bounds his mercy knows;
The plenteous source and spring, from whence
Eternal succour flows:
5 Whose friendly streams to us Supplies in want convey:
A healing spring, a spring to cleanse, And wash our guilt away.
1 How vast must their advantage be, How great their pleasure prove, Who live like brethren, and consent In offices of love!
True love is like that precious oil, Which, pour'd on Aaron's head, Ran down his beard, and o'er his robes Its costly moisture shed.
3 'Tis like refreshing dew, which does On Hermon's top distil;
Or like the early drops that fall On Zion's fruitful hill.
4 For Zion is the chosen seat, Where the Almighty King The promis'd blessing has ordain'd, And life's eternal spring.
1 O PRAISE the Lord with one consent, And magnify his Name; Let all the servants of the Lord His worthy praise proclaim !
2 Praise Him all ye, that in his house Attend with constant care, With those, that to his utmost courts With humble zeal repair!
3 For God his own peculiar choice The sons of Jacob makes; And Israel's offspring for his own Most valued treasure takes.
4 Let all with thanks his wondrous works In Zion's courts proclaim!
Let them in Salem, where He dwells, Exalt his holy Name!
