in Advent. 3 Though men your hope deride,

Nor will themselves believe;
Yet in his word confide,

Who never can deceive;
When heaven and earth shall pass away,

The saints shall see a glorious day.
4 For you the Lord intends

A bright abode on high;
The place where sorrow ends,

And nought is known but joy:
With such a hope, ye saints, rejoice;
We soon shall hear th' archangel's voice.

Spread of the Gospel.
Isa. ii, 18. Acts xv, 3. Rom. xiii, 12.
1 YES, we trust the day is breaking;

Joyful times are near at hand;
God, the mighty God, is speaking
By his word in ev'ry land:

Mark his progress;

Darkness flies at his command. me 2 Let us hail the joyful season,

Let us hail the rising ray:
When the Lord appears, there's reason
To expect a glorious day;

At his presence
Gloom and darkness haste away.

in Advent.
3 Oh! 'tis pleasant, 'tis reviving

To our hearts, to hear each day
Joyful news from far arriving,
How the gospel wins its way,

Those enlightning
Who in death and darkness lay.
4 God of Jacob, high and glorious,

Let thy people see thy hand;
Let the gospel be victorious,
Through the world, in ev'ry land;

Perish idols!
At Jehovah's dread command !

C. M. Christ's peaceful reign.

Isa. ii, 1-5.
1 BEHOLD, the temple of the Lord

In latter days shall rise
Above the mountains and the hills,

And draw our wond'ring eyes. 2[To this the joyful nations round,

All lands and tongues, shall flow: “Up to the hill of God,” they'll cry,

“And to his house we'll go.”]
3 The beam, that shines on Zion's hill,

Shall lighten ev'ry land;
The King, who reigns in Zion's towers,

Shall the whole world command.

in Advent. 4 No strife shall wound Messiah's reign,

Or mar the peaceful years;
To ploughshares now they beat their swords,

To pruning hooks their spears.
5 No longer hosts encountring hosts

Their millions slain deplore;
The clanging trumpet silent hangs,

The war-note sounds no more!
6 Come then, O come, from ev'ry land,

To worship at his shrine;
And, walking in the light of God,

With peace and glory shine!

Christ's second coming.

Rev. xi, 15-17. 1 HE COMES ! He comes ! the Judge on high !

The seventh trumpet speaks Him nigh;
The lightnings flash, the thunders roll-
He's welcome to the faithful soul. .
2 From heav'n angelic voices sound,

See the Almighty Jesus crown'd!
Girt with omnipotence and grace!

And glory decks the Saviour's face.
3 Descending from his ancient throne,
He claims the kingdoms for his own:
The kingdoms all obey his word,
And hail Him their triumphant Lord.

in Advent.
4 Shout! all ye people of the sky,

And all ye saints of God most high !
Jesus, who now his right obtains,
For ever and for ever reigns.

2nd Sunday in Advent.

L. M. Christ's glorious advent.

Luke xxi, 25-27. Rev. vi, 15-17. 1 THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,

The hills their fixed seat forsake;
And, with’ring, from the vault of night

The stars withdraw their feeble light.
2 The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form He came,
A silent lamb to slaughter led,

The bruis'd, the suff'ring, and the dead.
3 The Lord will come! a dreadful form,
- With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,

On cherub wings, and wings of wind,

Anointed Judge of human-kind!
4 Can this be He, once wont to stray

A pilgrim on the world's highway,
By power oppress'd, and mock'd by pride,
The Nazarene, the Crucified ?

in Advent. 5 While sinners to the rocks complain,

And seek the mountain's cleft in vain;
The saints, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy: The Lord is come!

Consolation found in God's word.

John v, 39. Rom. xv, 4.
1 FATHER of mercies, in thy word

What endless glory shines !
For ever be thy Name ador'd

For these celestial lines.
2 Here springs of consolation rise

To cheer the fainting mind;
Here thirsty souls receive supplies,

And sweet refreshment find.
3[When guilt and terror, pain and grief,

United, rend the heart,
And conscience turns from all relief,

That springs from human art:]
4 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice

Spreads heav'nly peace around;
And life, and everlasting joys,

Attend the blissful sound.
