1 Thess. iv, 16, 17. Rev. i, 7.
1 GREAT God! what do I see and hear? The end of things created! The Judge of mankind doth appear, On clouds of glory seated!
The trumpet sounds! the graves restore The dead, which they contain'd before! Prepare, my soul, to meet Him!
2 The dead in Christ shall first arise, At the last trumpet's sounding, Caught up to meet Him in the skies, With joy their Lord surrounding: No gloomy fears their souls dismay; His presence sheds eternal day
On those prepared to meet Him.
3[But sinners, fill'd with guilty fears, Behold his wrath prevailing; For they shall rise, and find their tears And sighs are unavailing: The day of grace is past and gone; Trembling they stand before the throne, All unprepared to meet Him.]
4[Great God! what do I see and hear? The end of things created! The Judge of mankind doth appear, On clouds of glory seated! Beneath his cross I view the day, When heaven and earth shall pass away; And thus prepare to meet Him.]
1 CHRISTIANS, awake, salute the happy morn, Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born; Rise to adore the mystery of love,
Which hosts of angels chanted from above; With them the joyful tidings first begun, Of God Incarnate, and the Virgin's Son.
2 Oh! may we keep and ponder in our mind God's wondrous love in saving lost mankind; Trace we the babe, who hath retriev'd our loss, From the poor manger to the bitter cross; Tread in his steps, assisted by his grace, Till man's first heav'nly state again take place.
3 Then may we hope, th' angelic hosts among, To join, redeem'd, a glad triumphant throng: He, that was born upon this joyful day, Around us all his glory shall display; Sav'd by his love, incessant we shall sing Eternal praise to heav'n's almighty King.
Angels announcing the Nativity.
1 WHILE shepherds watch'd their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground;
The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around.
2 Fear not, said he,-for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind- Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind:
3 To you in David's town this day Is born, of David's line,
A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; And this shall be the sign:
4 The heavenly babe you there shall find, To human view display'd,
All meanly wrapt in swathing bands, And in a manger laid.
5 Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith Appear'd a shining throng
Of angels, praising God, and thus Address'd their joyful song:
6 All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace;
Good-will henceforth from heaven to men Begin and never cease.
Birth of Christ.
Mal. iv, 2.
1 HARK, the herald angels sing, Glory to the new-born King, Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconcil'd!
2 Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies; With th' angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem!
3 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris'n with healing in his wings. 4 Mild He lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.
Christ's birth proclaimed.
1 IN HEAVEN a rapt'rous song was heard Of sweet seraphic praise,
When Jesus in our flesh appear'd A fallen world to raise.
2 The theme, the song, the joy, was new To each angelic tongue;
Swift through the realms of light it flew, And loud the echo rung.
3 Down through the portals of the sky The pealing anthem ran; And angels flew with eager joy To bear the news to man.
4 With joy the chorus we repeat, Glory to God on high,
Good-will and peace are now complete; Jesus is born to die.
5 Hail Prince of Life! for ever hail! Redeemer, Brother, Friend!
Though life, and earth, and time, must fail, Thy praise shall never end.
