2 Great Comforter! to thee we cry; O highest gift of God most high! O fount of life! O fire of love! Send sweet anointing from above! 3 Kindle our senses from above, And make our hearts o'erflow with love; With patience firm, and virtue high, The weakness of our flesh supply. 4 Far from us drive the foe we dread, And grant us thy true peace instead; So shall we not, with thee for guide, Turn from the path of life aside.
1 COME, blesséd Spirit! source of light! Whose power and grace are unconfined, Dispel the gloomy shades of night
The thicker darkness of the mind.
2 To mine illumined eyes, display
The glorious truth thy word reveals; Cause me to run the heavenly way, Thy book unfold, and loose the seals. 3 Thine inward teachings make me know The mysteries of redeeming love, The vanity of things below,
And excellence of things above.
4 While through this dubious maze I stray, Spread, like the sun, thy beams abroad To show the dangers of the way, And guide my feeble steps to God.
1 COME, Holy Spirit! calm my mind, And fit me to approach my God; Remove each vain, each worldly thought, And lead me to thy blest abode.
2 Hast thou imparted to my soul A living spark of holy fire? Oh! kindle now the sacred flame; Make me to burn with pure desire. 3 A brighter faith and hope impart,
And let me now my Saviour see; Oh! soothe and cheer my burdened heart, And bid my spirit rest in thee.
1 SURE the blest Comforter is nigh, "T is he sustains my fainting heart; Else would my hopes forever die, And every cheering ray depart.
2 Whene'er, to call the Saviour mine, With ardent wish my heart aspires,- Can it be less than power divine,
That animates these strong desires?
3 And, when my cheerful hope can say,- I love my God and taste his grace,— Lord! is it not thy blissful ray,
That brings this dawn of sacred peace?
4 Let thy good Spirit in my heart Forever dwell, O God of love! And light and heavenly peace impart,- Sweet earnest of the joys above.
1 STAY, thou insulted Spirit, stay!
Though I have done thee such despite, Cast not a sinner quite away,
Nor take thine everlasting flight.
2 Though I have most unfaithful been Of all who e'er thy grace received; Ten thousand times thy goodness seen, Ten thousand times thy goodness grieved:
3 Yet, oh, the chief of sinners spare, In honor of my great High Priest! Nor, in thy righteous anger, swear I shall not see thy people's rest.
1 As when in silence, vernal showers Descend, and cheer the fainting flowers, So, in the secrecy of love,
Falls the sweet influence from above.
2 That heavenly influence let me find In holy silence of the mind,
While every grace maintains its bloom, Diffusing wide its rich perfume.
3 Nor let these blessings be confined To me, but poured on all mankind, Till earth's wild wastes in verdure rise, And a young Eden bless our eyes.
1 COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove, With light and comfort from above: Be thou our guardian, thou our guide! O'er every thought and step preside. 2 To us the light of truth display, And make us know and choose thy way; Plant holy fear in every heart, That we from God may ne'er depart.
3 Lead us to holiness-the road
That we must take to dwell with God; Lead us to Christ, the living way, Nor let us from his precepts stray.
4 Lead us to God, our final rest, To be with him forever blest;
Lead us to heaven, its bliss to share- Fullness of joy forever there!
1 COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove! With all thy quickening powers, Kindle a flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
2 Look! how we grovel here below, Fond of these trifling toys! Our souls can neither fly nor go To reach eternal joys.
3 In vain we tune our formal songs; In vain we strive to rise;
Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies.
4 Dear Lord, and shall we ever live At this poor, dying rate- Our love so faint, so cold to thee, And thine to us so great?
5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove! With all thy quickening powers; Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love, And that shall kindle ours.
1 SPIRIT Divine! attend our prayer, And make our hearts thy home; Descend with all thy gracious power: Come, Holy Spirit, come!
2 Come as the light: to us reveal Our sinfulness and woe;
And lead us in those paths of life Where all the righteous go.
8 Come as the fire, and purge our hearts, Like sacrificial flame:
Let our whole soul an offering be To our Redeemer's name.
4 Come as the wind, with rushing sound, With Pentecostal grace;
And make the great salvation known Wide as the human race.
5 Spirit Divine, attend our prayer, And make our hearts thy home; Descend with all thy gracious power: Come, Holy Spirit, come!
1 COME, Holy Ghost, Creator, come, Inspire these souls of thine;
Till every heart which thou hast made Be filled with grace divine.
2 Thou art the Comforter, the gift Of God, and fire of love; The everlasting spring of joy, And unction from above.
3 Enlighten our dark souls, till they Thy sacred love embrace; Assist our minds, by nature frail, With thy celestial grace.
4 Teach us the Father to confess, And Son, from death revived, And Thee, with both, O Holy Ghost, Who art from both derived.
1 GLORY to God the Father be, Glory to God the Son,
Glory to God the Holy Ghost- Glory to God alone!
2 My soul doth magnify the Lord, My spirit doth rejoice
In God, my Saviour and my God; I hear his joyful voice.
