3 Religion bears our spirits up,
While we expect that blesséd hope,—
The bright appearance of the Lord :
And faith stands leaning on his word.

Gratitude.-Lam. 3.23.

My God, how endless is thy love!
Thy gifts are every evening new;
And morning mercies from above,
Gently distill like early dew.

2 Thou spread'st the curtains of the night,
Great guardian of my sleeping hours;
Thy sovereign word restores the light,
And quickens all my drowsy powers.
3 I yield my powers to thy command;
To thee I consecrate my days;
Perpetual blessings from thine hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

Completeness.-Col. 2: 10.

1 COMPLETE in thee, no work of mine
May take, dear Lord, the place of thine;
Thy blood has pardon bought for me,
And I am now complete in thee.
2 Complete in thee-no more shall sin
Thy grace has conquered, reign within;
Thy voice will bid the tempter flee,
And I shall stand complete in thee.

3 Complete in thee each want supplied,
And no good thing to me denied,
Since thou my portion, Lord, wilt be,
I ask no more complete in thee.

4 Dear Saviour! when, before thy bar
All tribes and tongues assembled are,
Among thy chosen may I be

At thy right hand-complete in thee.

Contentment.-Phil. 4:11.

L. M.

1 O LORD, how full of sweet content
Our years of pilgrimage are spent!
Where'er we dwell, we dwell with thee,
In heaven, in earth, or on the sea.
2 To us remains nor place nor time;
Our country is in every clime:

We can be calm and free from care
On any shore, since God is there.
3 While place we seek, or place we shun,
The soul finds happiness in none;
But with our God to guide our way,
'T is equal joy to go or stay.

4 Could we be cast where thou art not,
That were indeed a dreadful lot;
But regions none remote we call,
Secure of finding God in all.

Meekness.-Matt. 5: 5.

1 HAPPY the meek whose gentle breast,
Clear as the summer's evening ray,
Calm as the regions of the blest,
Enjoys on earth celestial day.

2 His heart no broken friendships sting,
No storms his peaceful tent invade;
He rests beneath th' Almighty's wing,
Hostile to none, of none afraid.

3 Spirit of grace, all meek and mild!
Inspire our breasts, our souls possess:
Repel each passion rude and wild,

And bless us as we aim to bless.

Faith. Eph. 2: 8.

1 Он, gift of gifts! oh, grace of faith!
My God! how can it be
That thou, who hast discerning love,
Shouldst give that gift to me?

2 How many hearts thou mightst have had
More innocent than mine!

How many souls more worthy far
Of that sweet touch of thine!

3 Ah, grace! into unlikeliest hearts
It is thy boast to come,
The glory of thy light to find
In darkest spots a home.

4 The crowd of cares, the weightiest cross,
Seem trifles less than light-
Earth looks so little and so low
When faith shines full and bright.

5 Oh, happy, happy that I am!
If thou canst be, O Faith,
The treasure that thou art in life,
What wilt thou be in death!

Godly Sincerity.-Eph. 5: 8.

1 WALK in the light! so shalt thou know
That fellowship of love,
His Spirit only can bestow,

Who reigns in light above.

2 Walk in the light! and thou shalt find
Thy heart made truly his,

Who dwells in cloudless light enshrined,
In whom no darkness is.

3 Walk in the light! and ev'n the tomb
No fearful shade shall wear;
Glory shall chase away its gloom,
For Christ hath conquered there.

4 Walk in the light! and thou shalt see
Thy path, though thorny, bright,
For God by grace shall dwell in thee,
And God himself is light.

Gentleness.-2 Tim. 2:24.

1 SPEAK gently-it is better far
To rule by love than fear;

802.

Speak gently-let no harsh word mar
The good we may do here.

2 Speak gently to the young-for they
Will have enough to bear;

Pass through this life as best they may,
'Tis full of anxious care.

3 Speak gently to the agéd one,

Grieve not the careworn heart;
The sands of life are nearly run,
Let them in peace depart.

4 Speak gently to the erring ones—
They must have toiled in vain;
Perchance unkindness made them so;
Oh, win them back again!

5 Speak gently-'t is a little thing,
Dropped in the heart's deep well;
The good, the joy, that it may bring,
Eternity shall tell.

[blocks in formation]

1 GLORY to God! whose witness-train,
Those heroes bold in faith,
Could smile on poverty and pain,
And triumph ev'n in death.

2 Oh! may that faith our hearts sustain,
Wherein they fearless stood,
When, in the power of cruel men,
They poured their willing blood.

3 God whom we serve, our God, can save,
Can damp the scorching flame,

Can build an ark, can smooth the wave,
For such as love his name.

804.

4 Lord! if thine arm support us still
With its eternal strength,
We shall o'ercome the mightiest ill,
And conquerors prove at length.

Trust.-Hab. 3; 17-19.

1 WHAT tho' no flowers the fig-tree clothe,
Though vines their fruit deny,
The labor of the olive fail,

And fields no food supply;—

2 Though from the fold with sad surprise,
My flock cut off I see;

Though famine pine in empty stalls,
Where herds were wont to be;—

3 Yet in the Lord will I be glad,
And glory in his love;

In him rejoice, who will the God
Of my salvation prove.

Spirituality.-Gal. 5: 22.

1 COME, Holy Ghost, my soul inspire-
This one great gift impart
What most I need-and most desire,
An humble, holy heart.

2 Bear witness I am born again,
My many sins forgiven:
Nor let a gloomy doubt remain
To cloud my hope of heaven.

805.

3 More of myself grant I may know,
From sin's deceit be free,

In all the Christian graces grow,
And live alone to thee.

Faith.-Mark 9: 24.

own;

1 LORD, I believe; thy power I
Thy word I would obey;
I wander comfortless and lone,
When from thy truth I stray.
