Jesus the Lord; how heav'nly fair
His form! how bright his beauties are!
2 O'er all the sons of human race
He shines with a superior grace,
Love from his lips divinely flows,
And blessings all his state compose.
3 Dress thee in arms, most mighty Lord,
Gird on the terror of thy sword,
In majesty and glory ride

With truth and meekness at thy side.
4 Thine anger, like a pointed dart,
Shall pierce the foes of stubborn heart;
Or words of mercy kind and sweet
Shall melt the rebels at thy feet.
5 Thy throne, O God, for ever stands,
Grace is the sceptre in thy hands;
Thy laws and works are just and right,
Justice and grace are thy delight.
6 God, thine own God, has richly shed
His oil of gladness on thy head,
And with his sacred Spirit blest
His first-born Son above the rest.

126. Christ's Ascension, and the Gift of the Spirit. I LORD, when thou didst ascend on high, Ten thousand angels fill'd the sky: Those heav'nly guards around thee wait, Like chariots that attend thy state. ? Not Sinai's mountain could appear! More glorious when the Lord was there; While he pronounc'd his dreadful law, And struck the chosen tribes with awe. 3 How bright the triumph none can tell, When the rebellious pow'rs of hell, That thousand souls had captive made, Were all in chains like captives led. 4 Rais'd by his Father to the throne, He sent the promis'd Spirit down,

With gifts and grace for rebel mén, '
That God might dwell on earth again.

1 GREAT God! whose universal sway

The known and unknown worlds obey,
Now give the kingdom to thy Son,
Extend his pow'r, exalt his throne.
2 Thy sceptre well becomes his hands,
All heav'n submits to his commands;^
His justice shall avenge the poor,
And pride and rage prevail no more, ©!
3 With pow'r he vindicates the just,
And treads th' oppressor in the dust;
His worship and his fear shall last,
Till hours, and years, and time be past.
4 As rain on meadows newly mown,
So shall he send his influence down:/
His grace on fainting souls distils,
Like heav'nly dew on thirsty hills.
5 The heathen lands that lie beneath
The shades of over-spreading death,
Revive at his first dawning light,
And deserts blossom at the sight.
6 The saints shall flourish in his days,
Drest in the robes of joy and praise;
Peace like a river from his throne."
Shall flow to nations yet unknown."-

128. Christ reigning in Heaven, and coming to
Judgment.
1 HE reigns; the Lord, the Saviour reigns!
Praise him in eyangelic strains:

Let the whole earth in songs rejoice,
And distant islands join their voice.
2 Deep are his counsels and unknown;
But grace and truth support his throne;

Tho' gloomy clouds his way surround,// Justice is their eternal ground.d 3 In robes of judgment, lo! he comes,

Shakes the wide earth, and cleaves the tombs ; Before him burns devouring fire,

The mountains melt, the seas retire. 4 His enemies, with sore dismay,

Fly from the sight, and shun the day;I
Then lift your heads, ye saints, on high,
And sing, for your redemption's nigh. A

130. Praise.pot 12x1

1 FROM all that dwell below the skies, Let the Creator's praise arise:

.821

Let the Redeemer's name be sung Thro' ev'ry land, by ev'ry tongue. 2 Eternal are thy mercies, Lord; (1 br Eternal truth attends thy word; 1994 Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more.

131. Hosanna; the Lord's Day; or, Christ's Resurrection and our Salvation.

1 THIS is the day the Lord hath made,
He calls the hours his own;
Let heav'n rejoice, let earth be glad,
And praise surround the throne.
2 To-day he rose and left the dead,
And Satan's empire fell;

To-day the saints his triumph spread, &
And all his wonders tell. 7

3 Hosanna to th' anointed King,
To David's holy Son: ber
Help us, O Lord, descend and bring
Salvation from thy throne.

4 Blest be the Lord, who comes to men
With messages of grace;

Who comes in God his Father's name T
To save our sinful race.

5 Hosanna in the highest strains

The church on earth can raise;
The highest heav'ns in which he reigns
Shall give him nobler praise..

132.4 Holiness and Comfort from the Word.
1 LORD, 1 esteem thy judgments right,
And all thy statutes just;

Thence I maintain a constant fight: A
With ev'ry flatt'ring lust.

2 Thy precepts often I survey:

I keep thy law in sight,

Thro' all the business of the day,

To form my actions right.

3. My heart in midnight silence cries,
"How sweet thy comforts be;" /
My thoughts in holy wonder rise, - .7"
And bring their thanks to thee.

4 And when my spirit drinks her fill,
At some good word of thine,
Not mighty men that share the spoil
Have joys compar'd to mine.

133. Sanctified Afflictions.

1 FATHER, I bless thy gentle hand; How kind was thy chastising rod, That forc'd my conscience to a stand, And brought my wand'ring soul to God! 2 Foolish and vain I went astray Ere I had felt thy scourges, Lord, I left my guide, and lost my way; But now I love and keep thy word. 3 "Tis good for me to wear the yoke, For pride is apt to rise and swell; 'Tis good to bear my Father's stroke, That I might learn his statutes well. 4 The law that issues from thy mouth | Shall raise my cheerful passions more Than all the treasures of the south, Or western hills of golden ore.

5 Thy hands have made my mortal frame, Thy Spirit form'd my soul within; Teach me to know thy wond'rous name, And guard me safe from death and sin. 6 Then all that love and fear the Lord At my salvation shall rejoice:: For I have hoped in thy word,

And make thy grace my only choice."

134. The Sinner Converted.

1 WHEN with my mind devoutly prest, Dear Saviour, my revolving breast Would past offences trace,

Trembling I make the black review,
Yet pleas'd behold, admiring too,
• The pow'r of changing grace.
