Latest and best edition of the most esteemed work on oriental antiquities and literature. "Herbelot received the most splendid reward of his industry: he was invited to Italy by Ferdinand II., Duke of Tuscany, who entertained him with that striking magnificence which always distinguished the race of the Medici. After the death of Ferdinand the illustrious Colbert recalled him to Paris, where he enjoyed the fruits of his labour, and spent the remainder of his days in easy retirement."-Sir W. Jones. "For solid literature, extensive and profound oriental learning, no man ever surpassed Herbelot; he that came nearest him was the late Sir W. Jones. The work itself is a treasure of useful and ornamental knowledge; and has done more to draw the attention of the Europeans to the writings of the Asiatics than all the other works yet published on the subject.”— Bibliogr. Dict. "Bartholomew D'Herbelot was born in Paris in 1625. He was first among the French who understood the oriental languages and history. He was at first but little regarded in his own country. He was received by Ferdinand the Second, Duke of Tuscany, with a distinction which taught France to know his merits. He was recalled and encouraged by Colbert, who encouraged everything. His Bibliotheque Orientale' is equally curious and profound. He died in 1695." "This is the original and only complete edition. It was printed at the expense of the author; the composition was the labour and amusement of many years. It abounds with striking pictures of the manners, customs, and the habits of the people of India. In the Quarterly Review, Vol. XII. is an elaborate account of the work, which occupies forty-seven pages. The Reviewer observes, A WORK MORE SPLENDID OR MORE COMPLETE IN ITS DECORATIONS WE HAVE SELDOM SEEN.' At the death of Mr. Forbes some reserved copies were deposited in a warehouse aud forgotten, or not a single copy would have remained unsold. It had long been considered scarce, and in consequence his daughter, the late Countess de Montalembert, was induced to republish the work in an abridged form, with a portion of the plates, which edition, from the impossibility of securing the present, obtained a rapid sale, and is now out of print."

"The drawings and collections of Mr. Forbes seem almost to exceed the powers of human industry and perseverance, and this literary monument to his name may fairly be considered the essence of his EXTRAORDINARY RESEARCHES. The whole work is very entertaining as well as instructive."-Literary Gazette.

"Of all the books which have been published on India, this perhaps is the most sterlingly valuable."-Atlas.

"It is to be regretted that this very splendid and expensive work was not published in a cheaper form, as it abounds in most striking pictures of the manners, customs, &c. of India."-Stevenson. 2501 HABESCI (Elias) Objects interesting to the English Nation, 2 vols. small 8vo. half bound, 68 Calcutta, 1793

"There are few authors to whom Oriental literature is under more deep obligations than to Sir Will. Jones; few who, like him, have not merely pointed out original and important sources of knowledge, but contributed in no inconsiderable degree to render them accessible. He was equally remarkable for his ardour and industry in philological pursuits from a very early period of his life, until its premature and lamented close."-Welsford, Origin of the English Language.

"His writings everywhere breathe pure taste in morals as well as in literature; and it may be said with truth, that not a single sentiment has escaped him which does not indicate the real eleganceand dignity which pervaded the most secret recesses of his mind. No author is better calculated to inspire those generous sentiments of liberty, without which the most just principles are useless and. lifeless."-Sir James Mackintosh.
