the ponderous volumes of Matthew Lumsden are the sole guide, will find here all that they need. Indeed, we do not hesitate to say that the little work before us is in many respects preferable to Mirza Ibrahim's Grammar, which is said to have obtained for its author from the East India Company the extravagantly munificent guerdon of a thousand pounds. Iu particular the remarks on syntax may be commended, and the dialogues and reading exercises are very judiciously selected. In fine, the Grammar may very safely be recommended and deserves success.”—Athenæum. "Canterbury, St. Augustine's College, August 17, 1857.

"Allow me to thank you for the Persian Grammar. The new plan on which the reading lessons and dialogues have been arranged deserves indeed every consideration; and it ought to receive a fair and conscientious trial. There are some misprints not noticed in the list of errata (three in the Armenian text, one in the Sanscrit, and a mistake in the explanation, and a few in the Persian extracts), which will no doubt be suppressed in a second edition."-R. Rost.

This volume reflects great credit both on the learning and industry of Mr. Bleeck. The Persian Grammar contains 238 pp. and the remaining 50 are devoted to the exposition of the new method of studying languages, to which also the Persian Grammar is adapted. The former part of the work, the Grammar, is distinguished by its appreciation of the difficulties presented to learners, and by much success in removing or lessening them. We have compared this Grammar with that of Sir W. Jones, with which alone we are acquainted, and certainly it excels it in simplicity as well as in fulness; while the application of the Grammar to the reading lessons is of vast help to the learner."

excellence.

There are many points of comparison between Homer and the Persian Epic Poet; but we shall not enter upon the parallel, which would form a good subject for a separate essay, and would require a book to itself. One coincidence, however, may be noticed, as to the martial enthusiasm the verses of both poets inspire. The Persian soldiery," says Mr. Binning, "when about to engage in combat, ar accustomed to sing aloud certain passages of the Sháhnámah, which practice has the

effect of inspiring them to absolute fury, as the verses of Homer did the warriors of Greece, or as the Runic lays of the Skalds were wont to animate the fierce Berserkars of Norway." 3315 FIRDUSSI's Heldenbuch von Iran, aus dem Schah Nameh, deutsch von J.

This splendid book was printed at the royal press in the city of Lucknow. The first six volumes contain the Dictionary, the seventh the Grammar.

Dr. Sprenger examined recently the MSS. at Lucknow, and speaks as follows of the remaining copies of the above:-" At the end of the hall there are bags full of books completely destroyed by white ants. Even new books have not been spared by these destructive insects; nearly the whole of the edition of the Táj alloghát' has been destroyed, and most of the remaining copies of the Haft Qulzum' have had the same fate."
