engraved copper-plate map of the World, with the lines and numbers of the degrees

of latitude and longitude, folio size, measuring 20% inches by 14, 30s

Single Maps of the World about this date, shewing the continent of America, are exceedingly curious and of the greatest rarity. This map exhibits North America under the name of Nova Hispania, making with Asia one vast connected country: In the South, Tierra del Fuego is represented as an immense antarctic continent. Several chains of mountains, rivers, numerous towns, etc. of America are marked and named ; as well as much other interesting information shewing the state of geographical knowledge at the period. The figure of the world is a parallelogram with elliptical sides ; on the top is simply • Universale,' • Orbis' no doubt being cut off, and at the bottom is •Giacomo Cosmographo. in Venetia. 1747 Very rare. Lowndes only notices one copy of the map on 24 sheets, as having occurred for sale, the White Knights, which fetched £2. 38: he does not mention this alphabetical Index and Key map, and from the importance and value even at his time of early maps of London, it may be safely asserted that he would have done so if he had heard of it; but the probability is that this Index may be rarer than the map itself. The Key map is in reality a good map of London, as it has all the Streets, Lanes, etc. marked and named.
