1734-38 • “Bayle was a man of immense but desultory reading; of a subtle understanding, invincible patience, and not less indomitable industry. His Dictionary is as a Cornucopia of flowers-bright, blooming, and captivating; but the roses have more than an ordinary share of keen and penetrating thorns. The notes are the grand field in which Bayle delighted to pour forth his multifarious knowledge; and I have reason to believe that his · Life of Nero' furnished a celebrated Greek quotation at a late ever-memorable state trial. But a further word respecting this extraordinary man. If he was sceptical, he was peaceably disposed in private life; although constantly assailed by the bitterest enemies. Even his 'magnum opus,' the Dictionary, was criticised before it appeared ; a practice not confined to foreign countries. Jurieu, Saurin, and Le Clerc were unable, collectively, to ruffle the calmness of his temper, or embitter the sweetness of his retirement. He told Des Maizeaux, in one of his letters, that from twenty to forty, he worked fourteen hours a dayand, in fact, he never knew what leisure was.”Dibdin's Library Companion. 4460 BERLIN ACADEMY PAPERS: A collection of 31 valuable and important

London, 1838 “In every respect this is one of the most beautiful publications which has issued from the press of this country. A combination is here exhibited in the same work, which of late years has never been excelled. English and Scotch artists have both been called into requisition, and the result has been two such resplendent volumes as only Great Britain could have produced.”

The chief points or objects of this work are developed in the title-page ; namely, bibliography, antiquities, and the picturesque. But it would be an unjust conclusion to infer that these beautiful volumes embraced no other subjects : for there is much of HISTORICAL RESEARCH, and more of social INTERCOURSE ; the author having been made a welcome visitor at some of the most respectable societies in the North of England, and in Scotland. The PictuRESQUE DEPART,

MENT tells its own tale, by a careful glance at the numerous and beautiful plates by which these pages are adorned."

Dr. Dibdin bas been termed the 'De Bure of the nineteenth century.' How well he has merited this title, few who have had occasion to refer to his elegant volumes-and what lover of old books does not do so daily ?-but will join heartily in the compliment thus conveyed. The science of Bibliography was at the lowest in this country when the Bibliomania appeared ; and to it we are mainly indebted for the formation of those literary clubs in England and Scotland, which have added so much to our literary stores during the last twenty years. It has been remarked by a well. known critic, that "no collection can be complete without Mr. Dibdin's volumes ; which are, inde. pendent of the solid information they contain, frequently enlivened by literary anecdote, and rendered generally interesting by great variety of observation, and acuteness of remark."-Brit.Critic. 4496 DICTIONNAIRE UNIVERSEL, historique, critique, et bibliographique, par Chaudon
