Lord Monson. • “Notes and Queries is become now an established institution, being possessed of that great element of immortality, an individual character and purpose. When a man, or a book, or a periodi. cal, has no strictly individual course, but is like fifty, or a hundred, or a thousand other new books or periodicals, he or it may live and prosper doubtless, but the time will also come when he or it must die. There may be three score and ten years for a man, three score and ten months for a journal, three score and ten weeks for a book ; but the time still comes soon when each must go hence and be seen no more. Force of individual character is the sal sapientum, the turner of base metal into gold, the preserving salt that is alone able to save from decay whatever perishable thing it touches. This Notes and Queries has; and because it has this, we may boldly predict that it shall be savoury in the mouths of generations yet to come. Literary men, centuries after we are gone, will be taking in their Notes and Queries : and the books that shall be hereafter, will be made the richer for the odd and interesting and important Notes they furnish to the authors who contribute Queries for the sake of getting them.”-Examiner, 28th July, 1855. 4554 NOTICES et Extraits des Manuscrits de la Bibliotheque du Roi, et d'autres

Paris, 1831 As there is some irregularity in publication of the recent volumes, I give a statement of what has been done since volume XIII. : vol. XIV. part 1, 2 ; vol. XV. not out; vol. XVI. part 2; vol. XVII. parts 1, 2. The “ Notices et Extraitsform a desirable Supplement to the “ Histoire de l'Académie des Inscriptions." The existence and continuation of this collection, exhibiting such noble proofs of French literary industry, are hardly sufficiently known or appreciated. How is it that so excellent an example is not followed by other European Governments ?.

Paris, 1768 4559 PANZER, ANNALES TYPOGRAPHICI, ab Artis inventae origine, 11 vols. in 6, 4to. £7.

Norimbergae, 1793-1803 The most elaborate and trustworthy record yet published of the early history of printing, it comes down to the year 1536, though the title-page of the first volume limits it to the fifteenth century. Panzer's great compilation consists of eleven volumes, published at intervals in the course of eleven years,—the first in 1793, the last in 1803. At first the author proposed to carry his Annals no further than the year 1500, and he achieved his purpose in five volumes ; he then extended his design, and carried the work up to 1536 in six volumes more. There is, it may be remarked, one very serious defect in Panzer's arrangements. While he inserted books in every other European language -Swedish, Dutch, Bohemian, &c.—he systematically omitted all those in German, because they were included, or intended to to be included, in a separate work, the . Annalen der ältern deutschen Litteratur,'—which he unfortunately did not live to bring down further than the year 1526. 4560 PAQUOT, Mémoires pour l'histoire littéraire des Pays-Bas, de la Principauté de Liège, etc. 18 vols. fine paper, uncut, 32s
