the same, Vols. 2—9, 8vo. no engravings, sd. uncut, 20s 1823 This edition of the works of Rabelais, printed by Didot the Elder, is ornamented with 132 engravings, 120 of which serve to illustrate the Songes drolatiques.

Cardinal Duprat was so enamoured of Rabelais' works that he was never without a copy of them. Wherever he went, his Rabelais went with him. Cardinal Jean du Bellay was possessed of the same feeling; he admired Rabelais so much, that he refused a learned individual of the day a seat at his table, because he had not read the Book, for so Rabelais' singular narrative was called. Boileau styled him, good sense under a mask. La Bruyère spoke of him as follows: "Rabelais is incomprehensible. His book is an inexplicable enigna; a chimera. It is the face of a beautiful woman, in other respects terribly deformed. It is a monstrous compilation of moral beauty and vile corruption; what is bad of it is of the worst description, the height of vulgarity; what is good, is most exquisitely so, the perfection of delicacy."

Sterne is well known to have been a great admirer of Rabelais, and not a little of the spirit of the Curé de Meudon, is diffused through his writings. The quaintness and abruptness of his style may be traced also to Rabelais.

Rabelais is more celebrated than read. In every page of his satire may be traced the character of the man, whose words on his death bed were-Je m'en vais chercher un grand peutêtre.

Swift, who has been called by some the English Rabelais, perhaps caught the idea of his Tale of a Tub, and of Gulliver, from a knowledge of the Curé de Meudon's productions.

"Whoever desires to understand the ideas and opinions of those times (the Civil Wars of France), fully, must read Rabelais. In the picture of licentiousness, full of repulsive nudities, which he unfolds, lies concealed a profound seriousness. Rabelais is one of the few masters of satire who has depicted the failings of a whole epoch in great and truthful outlines. He cites the errors of all classes before the tribunal of sound human understanding :-the extravagance of the chiefs of the land, permitted by over-indulgent kings; the disorders of the capital, which the King, to the astonishment of strangers, did not better suppress by the administration of justice; the abuses of justice itself—its forms confusing and entangling the cause-its multiplied documents in the process —and at last its decisions arrived at as if by the chances of the dice."-Athenæum.

368 RACINE (F.) Euvres, 7 vols. 8vo. fine plates, Etruscan calf gilt, £2. Paris, 1796 369 Euvres de, avec les variantes, par Petitot, et mémoires sur la Vie de Racine, 5 vols. 8vo. portrait and plates, calf neat, 14s Paris, 1810 "Racine is deservedly the favourite of the French nation; for besides the perfection of his style, and a complete mastery over his art, according to the rules prescribed by the national taste, there is a certain tenderness of sentiment, a movement of the heart, under all the artificial pomp by which it is disguised, which cannot fail to interest the reader. His Athalie is, perhaps, the most perfect of all his pieces."-Edinburgh Review, vol. 26, p. 93.

This rare Journal contains the most interesting and authentic information of the daily occurrences during the French Revolution. It is in fact the most valuable historical account of the French Revolution in existence.

"The Journal de Paris first appeared in 1777; it is therefore the oldest of the French daily Journals. Up to 1789, M. Sautreau de Marsy, conducted that part of it devoted to literature, to the satisfaction of the enlightened part of the community. For some years after the commencement of the Revolution, its columns were dedicated to politics only. It is not yet forgotten with what energy and talent the labours of the representative body were there commented on by Garat, Condorcet, and Regnaud de Saint-Jean-d'Angely. Literature was again introduced to its columns in 1796 by one of its Proprietors, M. Roederer."-Ventouillac.

The best History of France is undoubtedly that of the learned Sismondi, who diligently studied all the original Sources, and guided by a sound critical judgment, and by liberal political views, produced a work which supersedes all rivals. Sismondi's style is noble and vivid; he gives life to every character he describes. Many pages of Sismondi illustrate English History; and of the French Historians, he is the most honest and candid with regard to this country. Guizot recommends Sismondi's History of France as the best book of its kind. Since Mezerai's time, a vast amount of additional matter has been gathered in illustration of persons and events, all of which Sismondi has used in his work. "The author of the historical work now before us is already well known to our readers. * * * On the field which he has now chosen, Sismondi must be considered not as having rivals to surpass, but as having an entire deficiency to supply, Daniel, and even Mezerai are no longer read. Velly is a cold and languid compiler, whose narrative is very incomplete, and who is more inaccurate than is excusable in a writer who is so little turned aside by reflection from inquiring into facts. Henault's Abridgment is no more than a portable book of reference, and a convenient help to the recollection of those who are already acquainted with History. *** The History of Charlemagne in this work is incomparably the best that we have ever read. The narrative is full and accurate, uniformly supported, and often animated by original documents. The events are disposed in the clearest order; the authorities are weighed with critical judgment; curiosity and research everywhere directed to proper and important subjects; the language is natural and spirited; the narration is at the same time interesting and amusing; and if we were desirous of pointing out the best general account of the state of the world in the beginning of the ninth century, we should have no hesitation to name M. de Sismondi's History of Charlemagne." 406 SISMONDI, Républiques Italiennes, Vols. 12-16, 8vo. often wanting, 10s Par. 1818 A work that will yet always be read for the beauty of its style, and the richness and wisdom of its reflections. "The analogy between the republics of ancient Greece and those of Italy during the Middle Ages is also well deserving of attention. Between the population of Athens and that of Florence there is no greater apparent difference than might be ascribed to mere local causes. In both there is the same fervour for democratic rule, the same fickleness, the same thirst for pleasure, similar innate love of the fine arts, the same passionate vehemence of admiration or of hatred, and it would be difficult to establish any important moral difference between a Florentine of the age of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and a Greek of the age of Pericles. Whoever would wish to trace the commerce, the philosophy, art, literature, and policy of modern Europe, must make the period of the Italian republics a particular study."-Gent.'s Mag. Oct. 1844.

The author's own abridgement.

"The publication of M. Sismondi's Histoire des Républiques Italiennes has thrown a blaze of light around the most interesting, at least, in many respects, of European countries, during the middle ages. I am happy to bear witness, so far as my own studies have enabled me, to the learning and diligence of this writer; qualities which the world are apt sometimes not to suppose, when they perceive so much eloquence and philosophy. I cannot express my opinion of M. Sismondi in this respect more strongly than by saying that his work has almost superseded the annals of Muratori."-Hallam's Middle Ages. One of the best written French Works on English History. Nowhere is the long struggle of the Saxons against their Norman Conquerors, and their final amalgamation, better recited than in Thierry's stirring pages. 420 THIERS, Histoire de la REVOLUTION FRANÇAISE, 10 vols. 8vo. best edition, numerous steel portraits and plates, sd. 38s Paris, Furne, 1857

"The History of the French Revolution by Thiers is a celebrated and popular book in France -and I believe in Europe. His was, in the highest degree, one of that quality of minds which takes a marvellous grasp of all things-rapid in the acquirement of knowledge-one of those fine and unsullied pages on which so much may be written. He set himself to examine into the facts and the men of the Revolution. He inquired into its laws, it orations, its battles, its victories, its defeats. He occupied himself with researches of a thousand kinds; -war he discussed with the generals-finance with the financiers-diplomacy with the diplomatists. Nothing escaped his enthusiastic, persevering, and enlightened mind. The History of the French Revolution unites in itself all the kinds of merits which characterise those various brief historic relations, which are not history itself, though nearly related to it. Its pages contain admirable passages. There are in many parts of this great book, whole chapters, which read as if they had been written with the sword."-Jules Janin.
