5718 WOOD'S (R.) Antiquities of PALMYRA and BALBEC ; 2 vols. in 1, impl. folio, 103 fine engravings, hf. red morocco, uncut, £2.

1837

"When I endeavour to do justice to the editions of Palmyra and Balbec, I would not confine my encomiums to the sculptures. The modest descriptions prefixed are standards of writing; the exact measure of what should and what should not be said, and of what was necessary to be known, was never comprehended in more clear diction, or more elegant style. The pomp of the buildings has not a nobler air than the simplicity of the narration."-Lord Orford. 5719 WYATT'S (M Digby) Metal Work and its Artistic Design-Specimens of Ornamental Art Workmanship in Gold, Silver, Iron, Brass, and Bronze, from the Twelfth to the Nineteenth Centuries, impl. folio, 50 large plates of the choicest examples, exquisitely printed in gold and colours, with a History of the Art in Italy, England, France, Germany and Spain, together with its Theory and Practice, (pub. at £6. 6s) elegantly bound in cloth, 36s

beautiful copy (with both Mandements) in blue MOROCCO extra, gilt edges, by DE ROME, £7.78 Impressum in celebri Lothoringie pago divi Nicolai de portu per petrum jacobi presbyterum, loci paganum, 1518 Priced 1818, Longman's, £12. 128. This is a Poem on the siege of Nancy in 1477, when the Duke of Burgundy was killed. It was printed in a village near Nancy.

Dr. Cotton asserts that only this single Work was ever printed at St. Nicolas du Port, bt this is an error, as the same printer is known to have printed the Horæ ad Usum Fullensis Ecclesiæ at this place as early as 1503.

This volume is extremely rare, and very curious. It is ornamented with many woodcuts by Jacobus, executed in a spirited style, which represent the various events of the war of Lorraine. Some Bibliographers have mentioned an edition of 1476, but no such edition ever existed: the error has arisen from the manner in which that date is introduced at the close of the Poem.

"The celebrated Liber Nanceidos." "It is a poem written in Latin hexameter verse by P. Blaru, descriptive of the memorable siege of Nancy in 1476, by Charles the Rash, Duke of Burgundy, who perished before the walls. His death is described in the sixth book, the passage relating to it beginning

'Est in Nanceijs aratro locus utilis aruis.'

A woodcut portrait of the commanding French general, Renet, is in the frontispiece. A good copy of this handsomely printed, and rather interesting work should always grace the shelves of an historical or classical collector."-Dibdin's Tour, vol. ii. p. 543.

5737 CALILA-WA-DIMNA. DIRECTORIUM HUMANE VITE alias Parabolæ antiquorum Sapientum (Johanne de Capua interprete) folio, with about 100 exceedingly curious and spirited woodcuts, fine copy in green morocco extra, gilt edges, VERY RARE, £10. 10s s. 1. & a., sed circa 1480

A book of great rarity and curiosity, universally known as the Fables of Pilpay, a collection of Tales written originally in Sanscrit by Vishnu-Sarma, under the title of "Pantcha-Tantra."-No collection of Tales enjoys a higher reputation in the East, translations having been made into almost every one of its dialects. In Europe its reputation has been equally great, and the innumerable versions into almost every language bear witness to its popularity. This Latin version was made from the Hebrew by John of Capua (a baptized Jew) who tells us," Hic est liber parabolarum antiquorum sapientum nationum mundi. Et vocatur liber kelile et dimne et prius quidum in lingua fuerat indorum translatus. Inde in linguam translatus persarum. This version from the

Hebrew is the parent of nearly all the Translations into the languages of Europe. Sir William Jones was one of the first to point out the name of the real author, and thus expressed his admiration of his work: "The Fables of Vishnu-Sarman, whom we ridiculously call Pilpay, are the most beautiful, if not the most ancient in the world."

Priced 1837, Payne and Foss, £14. 148; 1842, Thorpe, £10. 10s; White Knight's copy sold for £21. 198; Sir Mark Sykes's, £31. 10s; Hibbert's, £8. 15s. This is the edition described by Brunet (see Bedpai) as having in the running title "capitulum secundum," etc.

"No collection of tales enjoys a greater reputation in the East. Sir William Jones, in his Discourses on the Hindoos, thus expresses his admiration of them, and points out the real name of the author. The Fables of Vishnusarman, whom we ridiculously call Pilpay, are the most beautiful, if not the most ancient in the world." This Latin version was made by John de Capua, from the Hebrew, and is the parent of all the European translations. See Ellis's Metrical Romances.

This translation was made by Joannes de Capua about the year 1262. In vol. 6, page 460 of the Bibliotheca Græca of Fabricius, is an account of the various Versions and Interpretations of this "Liber jucundus et utilis lectu, refertusque Fabulis lepide et ingeniose excogitatis, quibus malitia, fraudes et stultitia hominum in vita communi, et in aulis frequens ad vivum depingitur. Dicitur scriptus ante duo amplius annorum millia Indorum lingua."
