"The interest of the poem of Beowulf is not confined to the Philologist, it also interests the antiquary and the historian in a very high degree. In it we have the most lively sketches of a state of society, which our imagination could never have pictured to us without it, and we have conteinporary illustrations of mannners and customs, which will solve a host of doubtful questions. We never in our life met with a poem so full of beautiful and striking passages as the Romance of Beowulf."

By an ingenious contrivance this dictionary not only answers the purpose of a Sazon-English and of a Saxon-Latin dictionary, but of an English and Saxon, Latin and Saxon dictionary.

I may add, that the English index refers to all the English words immediately derived from Saxon, of which Dr. Bosworth not only gives the derivation, but the cognate words from other Gothic languages.

This book, on the compilation of which the author has bestowed twelve years of assiduous industry, has appeared in consequence of a prize put forth by the Berlin Academy in the year 1846. The object of the work is, first of all, to collect and explain the ancient GERMAN NAMES of PERSONS and PLACES, and beyond this it is also the most important source for the student of SWEDISH, DANISH and ENGLISH NAMES, so far as the latter are of Germanic origin. It will be sufficient here to quote the words of the celebrated Jacob Grimm, who said in the Berlin Academy, in 1858: “I congratulate our Academy on the result that a prize, offered in 1846 for a work on the old high German proper names has met with. Foerstemann's important and complete performance, since the decision has obtained their favour, would soon be printed in two stout quartos, to be laid before the eyes of all. As a first successful disposer of the mass of materials no common caviller would equal him (Foerstemann)."

1214 GRIMM'S Deutsche Grammatik, 4 vols. 8vo. complete, cloth, £2.8s 1822-37 The Deutsche Grammatik of Grimm is the work not of an age, nor of a century, but like the great History of the Athenian, кrŋμa ɛìç àɛí. It is the Magazine from whence all draw their facts and illustrations; it is a monument of learning, industry, comprehensiveness, and arrangement." Latham.

"In this astonishing work a whole family of languages has for the first time found an expositor, and as it were an historiographer, placed on the summit of the comparative linguistic analysis of our age, Grimm's Teutonic Grammar comprehends the Scandinavian as well as the German languages in all their ramifications, reduces each of them to its most ancient forms, and follows it down from that point through the whole course of its development: this colossal work forms an epoch in the history of ethnological history."-The Chevalier Bunsen.
