M.D. unde XVI. An extremely rare edition in Low-German and Latin. The only other copy I have been able to trace, was in the possession of H. G. Bohn, in 1847, and was priced £3. 38.

It is a somewhat singular fact that a Low-German version of a Code of Laws should have been printed and published at Augsburg, an Upper-German town.

1238 SACHSENSPIEGEL, auffs New fleissig corrigirt von Wolff Loss, Deutsch und Latein. folio, in the original stamped binding, with brass knobs, 12s Leipzig, Wolrab, 1545 "The Sachsenspiegel is the earliest and most important of the German codes. 1239 SCHILTERI (Jo.) THESAURUS ANTIQUITATUM TEUTONICARUM, Ecclesiasticarum, Civilium, Literarium, Monumenta Francica, Alemannica, Saxonica, Biblica, Ecclesiastica, et Civilia, cum GLOSSABIO Teutonico non et Linguæ solum inservituro sed et Antiquitatibus abundanti, 3 vols. folio, facsimiles of Ornaments in Ancient MSS. £2. 16s Ulmae, 1727-28 Priced, 1843, Payne and Foss, £4. 14s 6d. "Schilteri Thesaurus Teutonicus est un recueil rempli de documents précieux pour l'histoire civile et littéraire de l'Allemagne à l'époque Carlovingienne; Vendu 125 fr."--Brunet.

A most valuable collection of the earliest monuments of the Northern Languages in Europe, containing the works of OTFRID, NOTKER, WILLERAN, an ANGLO-SAXON List of the Gospels for Sundays and Festivals, FRANCIC LAWS, Rhythmus Antiquus de Carolo Magno, &c. The third volume is entirely occupied by the valuable GLOSSARY.

"The Thesaurus of Schilter is a real mine of Francic Literature. The text is founded on a careful collation of all the MSS. to which he could obtain access, and these are highly valuable for their antiquity and correctness."-Warton's English Poetry by Price.

The more modern prose Edda bears Snorro Sturleson's name, although this collection of the Myths of the gods and interpretation of wars, of metre, and of the images of pagan poetry, was gradually formed by the labours of several persons. It was destined for the instruction of the younger Scalds, and it proves that the ancient poetry was retained much later among the Icelanders as a learned art.

The ancient mythological songs, to which the more modern Edda refers, are almost all preserved. They are found in the poetic and more ancient Edda of Sämund (from the priest Saemund the learned, who died in 1133, and is regarded as the author of this collection). It also contains those heroic traditions which, founded on the remembrance of the great migration of nations, are here preserved in their primitive and pagan form, while those in Germany underwent a Christian transformation; on this account, therefore, they are invaluable in tracing the history of German traditions. 1290 EDDA SEMUNDAR HINNS FRODA, etc. Edda Rythmica seu antiquior, vulgo Sæmundina dicta, Islandice et Latine, cum variis Lectionibus, Notis, Glossario Vocum et Indice Rerum, 1787-Eddæ Sæmundina sive Antiquioris Carmina mythico-historica de Volsungis, Budlungis, et Viflungis vel Giukundis, et Rebus gestis Danorum, Suecorum, Norwegorum, Finnorum, Suevorum, Fran., Burg., Goth., Hunn., Islandice et Latine, cum Notis, Glossario Vocum, etc. 2 vols. 1818-28-together 3 vols. 4to. very fine copy, calf extra, gilt edges, £5.5s Hafnia, 1787-1828 the same, Vol. I.
