Jabua'sexbortation before his death, JOSHUA.

God's benefits to Ifrag. LORD your God hath done unto all anger of the LORD be kindled against thefe nations becaufe of you: for the you, and ye fhall perish quickly from LORD your God is he that hath fought off the good land which he hath given for you. unto you.

4 Behold, I have divided unto you by lot thefe nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that have cut off, even unto the great fea weftward.

5 And the LORD your God, he thall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your fight; and ye fhall poffefs their land, as the LORD your God hath promifed unto you.

6 Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Mofes, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

7 That ye come not among thefe nations, thefe that remain among you: neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor caufe to fwear by them, neither ferve them, nor bow your felves unto them:

8 But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day. 9 For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and frong but as for you, no man hath been able to ftand before you unto this day.

10 One man of you fhall chafe a thoufand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promifed you.

II Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

12 Elfe if ye do in any wife go back, and cleave unto the remnant of thefe nations, even thefe that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

CHAP. XXIV.

ND Jofhua gathered all the tribes of Ifrael to Shechem, and called for the elders of Ifrael, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they prefented themfelves before God.

2 And Joshua faid unto all the pen ple, Thus faith the LORD God of Ifracl, Your fathers dwelt on the other fide of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

3 And I took your father Abraham from the other fide of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his feed, and gave him isaac.

4 And I gave unto Ifaac Jacob and Efau: and I gave unto Efau mount Seir, to poffeis it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

19 And Joshua faid unto the people, Ye cannot ferve the LORD: for he is an holy God he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your tranfgreffions nor your fins.

20 If ye forfake the LORD, and ferve age gods, then he will turn and do! you hurt, and confume you, after that he hath done you good."

The LORD our God will we ferve, and 24 And the people faid unto Joshua, his voice will we obey.

25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and fet them a ftatute and an ordinance in Shechem,

26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great ftone, and let it up there under an oak, that was by the fanc tuary of the LORD.

27 And Joshua faid unto all the people, Behold, this stone thall be a witnefs unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he fpake unto us: it fhall be therefore a witness unto you, left ye deny your God.

28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

29 And it came to país after these things, that Joshua the fon of Nun, the fervant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath ferah, which is in mount Ephraim, on

31 And Ifrael ferved the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Jo thaa, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Ifrael.

34 And the Amorites forced the chil dren of Dan into the mountain: for they would not fuffer them to come down to the valley:

35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijaloa, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the houfe of Joeph prevailed, fo that they became tributaries.

2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye fhail throw down their altars; but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

3 Wherefore I alfo faid, I will not drive them out from before you; but they fhall be as thorns in your fides, and their gods thall be a inare unto you.

4 And it came to pafs, when the angel of the Lord fpake thele words unto all the children of Ifrael, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5 And they called the name of that

And the children of Ifrael did evil in the light of the LORD, and ferved Baalim:

was hot againft Ifrael; and he faid, Because that this people bath tranigreffed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice:

21 I alfo will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:

22 That through them I may prove Ifrael, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

23 Therefore the LORD left thofe nations, without driving them out haftily; neither delivered he them in to the hand of Joshua.

CHAP. III.

the Lone are the nations which these the LORD ieft, to prove Ifrael by them, even as many of Ifrael as had not known all the wars of Canaan ;)

2 Only that the generations of the children of Ifrael might know, to teach them war, at the leaft fuch as before knew nothing thereof;

15 Whitherfoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had faid, and as the LORD had worn unto them: and they were greatly diftreffed.

16% Nevertheless the LORD raifed upjudges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that fpoiled them.

17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not fo.

18 And when the LORD raised them p judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reafon of them that oppreffed them and

vexed them.

to And it came to pafs, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to ferve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceafed not from their ewn doings, nor from their iubborn way.

4 And they were to prove Ifrael By them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moles.

5 And the children of ifrael-dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and jebulires:

6 And they took their daughters for be their wives, and gave their daugh ters to their fons, and ferved their gods.

9 And when the children of Ifrael cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of lfrael, who delivered them, even Oth niel the fon of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Ifrael, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chufhan-rifhathaim king of Mefopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed againft Chufhan-ritha. thaim.

11 And the land had reft forty years. And Othniel the fon of Kenaz died.

12 And the children of Ifrael did evil again in the fight of the LORD: and the LORD ftrengthened Egion the king of Moab againft Ifrael becaufe

20 And Ehud came unto him: and he was fitting in a fummer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud faid, I have a meffage from God unto thee. And he arose out of his feat.

21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thruft it into his belly:

22 And the haft alio went in after) the blade; and the fat clofed upon the blade, fo that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out,

AND the children of Ifrael again did evil in the fight of the LoRD, when Ehud was dead.

3 And the children of Ifrael cried unto the LORD: for he had nine han. dred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppreffed the children of Ifrael.

4 And Deborah, a prophetefs, the wife of Lapidoth, the judged lirtel at that time.

26 And Ehud efcaped while they tarried, and paffed beyond the quarries, and efcaped unto Seirath,

27 And it came to país, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Ifrael went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

28 And he faid unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and fuffered not a man to pafs
