David killeth Goliath.

1. SAMUEL. Jonathan's love for David

me, I caught bim by his beard, and, his forehead; and he fell upon his Imote him, and flew him. face to the earth.

38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brais upon his head; alfo he armed him with a coat of mail.

39 And David girded his fword upon his armour, and he affayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David faid unto Saul, I cannot go with thefe; for I have not proved them. And Dávid put them off him.

50 So David prevailed over the Phi liftine with a fling and with a ftone, and fmote the Philiftine, and flew him; but there was no fword in the hand of David.

51 Therefore David ran and flood upon the Philiftine, and took his fword, and drew it out of the fheath thereof, and flew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philiftines faw their champion was dead, they fled.

52 Andthe men of lfrael and of Ju dah arofe, and fhouted, and purfued the Philiftines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philiftines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

53 And the children of 1 frael returned from chafing after the Philiftines, and they spoiled their tents.

42 And when the Philiftine looked about, and faw David, he difdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43 And the Philiftine faid unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comeit to me with ftaves? And the Philiftine curfed David by his gods.

44 And the Philifline faid to David, Come to me, and I will give thy fleth unto the fowls of the air, and to the beafts of the field.

45 Then faid David tothe Philiftine,

Thou comeft to me with a fword, and with a fpear, and with a fhield: but come to thee in the name of the LORD of hofts, the God of the armies of Ifrael, whom thou haft defied.

46 This day will the Loan deliver thee into mine hand; and I will fmite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcafies of the hof of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beafts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in lfrael.

57 And as David returned from the flaughter of the Philiftine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philiftine in his hand.

58 And Saul faid to him, Whofe fon art thou, thou young man? And David anfwered, I am the fon of thy fervant Jeffe the Beth-lehemite.


AND it came to país, when he

had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the foul of Jonathan was knit with the foul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own foul.

2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's houfe.

Saul fecketb to kill David. CHAP. XIX. Jonathan intercedes for David. 7 And the women answered one ano-I am a poor man, and lightly ef. ther as they played,and faid, Saul hath teemed? flain his thoufands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, and the faying difpleafed him; and he faid, They have afcribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have afcribed but thoufands: and what can be have more but the kingdom? 9And Sauleyed David from that day and forward.

24 And the fervants of Saul told him, faying, On this manner fpake David.

18 And David faid unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Ifrael, that I fhould lefon in law to the king?

25 And Saul faid, Thus fhall ye lay to David, The king defireth not any dowry, but an hundred fore skins of the Philiftines, to be avenged of the king's enemies But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philiftines.

26And when his fervants told David thefe words, it pleafed David well to be the king's fon in law : and the days were not expired.

27 Wherefore David arofe and went, he and his men, and flew of the Phi liftines two hundred men; and David brought their fore fkins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's fon in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

28 And Saul faw and knew that the LORD was with David,and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.

30 Then the princes of the Philif tines went forth: and it came to pafs, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wifely than all the fervants of Saul; fo that his name was much fet by.

AND David fied from Naloth in Ramah, and came and faid before Jonathan, What have I done! what is mine iniquity? and what is my fin before thy father, that he feeketh my life?

2 And he faid unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or finail, but that he will thew it me: and why fhould my father hide this thing from me? it is not fo.

5 And David faid unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I thould not fail to fit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may bide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

6 If thy father at all miss me, then fay, David earnefily asked leave of ne that he might run to Beth-lehem his city: for there is a yearly facrifice there for all the family.

Jonathan's kindness to David. CHAP. XXI. 24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king fat him down to eat meat. 25 And the king fat upon his feat, at other times, even upon a feat by the wall: and Jonathan arofe, and Abner Lat by Saui's fide, and David's place was empty.

13 And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his fpittle fall down upon his beard.

That all of you have confpired againft me,and there is none that theweth me that my fon hath made a league with the fon of Jeffe, and there is none of you that is forry for me, or theweth unto me that my fon hath stirred up my fervant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

9¶Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was fet over the fervants of Saul, and faid, I faw the fon of Jeffe coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the fon of Ahitub.

10 And he enquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the fword of Goliath the Philistine.

11Then the king fent to call Ahi. melech the prieft, the fon of Ahitab, and all his father's houfe, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.

12 And Saul faid, Hear now, thou fon of Ahitub. And he answered, Here 1 am, my lord.

14 Then Ahimelech anfwered the king, and faid, And who is fo faithful among all thy fervants as David, which is the king's fon in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honour

16 And the king faid, Thou shalt furely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.
