approach, his countenance became animated; he smiled, kissed his father, and appeared to be taking a last farewell. He then strove hard, very hard, to communicate something; but, with all his efforts, he could not make himself intelligible.

This was truly a season of heartfelt sorrow to his affectionate parent, rendered still more poignant by the above distressing circumstance. If, thought he, it were possible, that one drop in this cup, which may not pass from us unless we drink it, can be more bitter than all the rest, this surely must now be it. To be assured, as we contemplate the faded form of a beloved child, that the moment of separation is drawing nigh, which no effort of ours can deferis, indeed, a period when the mind feels. its own bitterness, and is awakened to the strongest emotions of tenderness and love.

After some time, his father thought he apprehended what he wished to express ;

and such answers were given to the dear youth as appeared to quiet his intense anxiety, and some expressions were then uttered which seemed to comfort and compose his mind. His afflicted mother now joined the sorrowful scene, when the same bright and expressive eye beamed upon her also; and he tenderly kissed her as the last token of his love. She inquired of him if he was then taking his leave of us; to which he softly and sweetly answered, "Yes." He was then asked, if he felt comfortable and happy in his mind? and he again answered, "Oh! yes.”

He seemed then, to those around him, to be going to his heavenly mansion; and no doubt, it was his own feeling at that time. From this period he appeared to be much engaged in prayer and praise: he lay very still and quiet, but his lips continued to move; yet nothing could be gathered except the words," Grace and Truth."

He remained until the afternoon of the following day, in the course of which his father ventured to express a hope that he was then favoured to feel the everlasting arms of Divine love to be underneath to support him in this season of nature's extremity; to which he softly, but deliberately, replied, "They-are-underneath!" These were the last words he distinctly uttered.

At this solemn period, whilst his afflicted parents were earnestly, but calmly watching the departure of their dear and only child.

a beloved and affectionate aunt, and his faithful nurse, being also present-the messenger arrived to conduct him to glory; and his pure spirit was so gently invited to quit the frail tabernacle that its exit was without sigh or struggle, leaving the evidence of peace upon the minds of those present, with the consoling persuasion that the redeemed and purified spirit of the beloved youth had escaped from the trials and temptations of time,

to experience the answer to that prayer which he has left upon record in his private meditations :-" When led by Thee through all dangers, the flesh and the heart at length fail, supported by Thy everlasting arms, saved by Thy sacrifice, in my Father's kingdom and Redeemer's home, be Thou my portion for ever."

"We miss thee, we miss thee, dear child, Thou hast left us here alone;

Our once loved hearth looks desolateFor thou, its joy, hast flown.

Thou hast swiftly run thy mortal race,
And the glorious path hast trod,
To the brightness of thy Father's face,
And the bosom of thy God.

Thou hast drunk of all the living streams
Which flow from fields above;

And wearest on thy brow the beams
Of the great Redeemer's love.

May those who mourn thy loss,

Thy bright example own;

Like thee, with patience, bear the cross, Like thee, obtain the crown."
