PSALMS AND HYMNS.

1

THE PERFECTIONS OF GOD.

SIN

[blocks in formation]

ING praise to God who reigns above,
The God of all creation,
The God of power, the God of love,
The God of our salvation:
With healing balm my soul He fills,
And every faithless murmur stills;
To God all praise and glory.

2 The angel-host, O King of kings,
Thy praise for ever telling,
In earth and sky all living things
Beneath Thy shadow dwelling,
Adore the wisdom which could span,
And power which formed creation's plan;
To God all praise and glory.

3 What God's Almighty power hath made
His gracious mercy keepeth;
By morning glow or evening shade
His watchful eye ne'er sleepeth;
Within the kingdom of His might
Lo! all is just and all is right;
To God all praise and glory.

4 The Lord is never far away;
But, through all grief distressing,
An ever-present help and stay,

Our peace and joy and blessing;
As with a mother's tender hand,
He leads His own, His chosen band;
To God all praise and glory.

5 When every earthly hope hath flown
From sorrow's sons and daughters,
Our Father from His heavenly throne
Beholds the troubled waters;
And at His word the storm is stayed
Which made His children's hearts afraid;
To God all praise and glory.

6 Thus all my toilsome way along
I sing aloud Thy praises,
That men may hear the grateful song
My voice unwearied raises;

Be joyful in the Lord, my heart;
Both soul and body bear your part;
To God all praise and glory.

THE God of Abraham praise,

Who reigns enthroned above,

Ancient of everlasting days,
And God of Love!

Jehovah, great I AM!

By earth and heaven confessed,
I bow and bless the sacred name,
For ever blessed.

3

2 The God of Abraham praise,
At whose supreme command,
From earth I rise and seek the joys
At His right hand.

I all on earth forsake,

Its wisdom, fame, and power;
And Him my only portion make,
My shield and tower.

3 The God of Abraham praise,
Whose all-sufficient grace
Shall guide me all my happy days
In all His ways:

4

He calls a worm His friend;
He calls Himself my God!
And He shall save me to the end,
Through Jesus' blood.

He by Himself hath sworn;
I on His oath depend;

I shall, on eagles' wings upborne,
To heaven ascend:

I shall behold His face,

I shall His power adore;
And sing the wonders of His grace
For evermore.

1 LITERNAL Light! eternal Light!

ETER

the soul must be,

BINNEY.

How pure
When, placed within Thy searching sight
It shrinks not, but, with calm delight
Can live, and look on Thee!

2 The spirits that surround Thy throne
May bear the burning bliss;
But that is surely theirs alone,
Since they have never, never known
A fallen world like this.

3 O! how shall I, whose native sphere
Is dark, whose mind is dim,
Before the Ineffable appear,
And on my naked spirit bear
That uncreated beam ?

4 There is a way for man to rise
To that sublime abode :-
An offering and a sacrifice,
The Holy Spirit's energies,
An Advocate with God.

5 These, these prepare us for the sight
Of Holiness above:

1

The sons of ignorance and night
May dwell in the Eternal Light,
Through the Eternal Love!

8s. & 6s.

H, wondrous vast surpassing love,
The theme of heavenly hosts above,
And of the saints below!

We only know in part while here;
But when in glory we appear,
Then shall we fully know.

2 It is a mystery divine,

Where justice, mercy, truth, combine
God's glory to display!

His righteousness is satisfied,

Since Christ for us in love hath died,

And borne our curse away.

3 'Midst all the changing scenes around,
In this no change can e'er be found,
For God Himself is love.
Though earthly things shall all decay,
And heaven and earth shall pass away,
Yet this shall ne'er remove.

4 Once loved in Christ, for ever loved!
God's counselled purpose stands unmoved,
Eternally the same:

5

And when we change this house of clay
We shall throughout eternal day

God's endless love proclaim !

[blocks in formation]

1 P to the Lord that reigns on high, And views the nations from afar,

Let everlasting praises fly,

And tell how large His bounties are.

2 He that can shake the worlds He made,
When sore displeasure lifts the rod,
His goodness, how amazing great!
How great the mercies of our God!
3 He overrules all mortal things;
He governs all our mean affairs;
On humble souls, the King of kings
Bestows His counsels and His cares.
4 Our sorrows and our tears we pour
Into the bosom of our God;

He hears us in the mournful hour,
And strength supplies to bear the load.
5 O could our thankful hearts devise
A tribute equal to Thy grace,

To the third heaven our songs should rise,
And join the angels in Thy praise.
