in each other's houses for that purpose; but I shall tell you more about the manner in which the first Christian Church was governed, another time.

CHAPTER IV.

Peter and John cure the Lame Man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple.

AND now I will tell you by what means the Apostles were permitted to confirm the faith of the believers in Christ, and also to convert others.

In the first place, the Holy Ghost gave them power to work miracles as Christ did when He was on earth; in order that men might know, when they saw these miracles, that God was with them; and that therefore

their words and their witness about

our Saviour were true.

The miracle which I am going to speak of, is, the cure of a lame man by two of the Apostles. I will tell it to you nearly in the words of St. Luke.

Peter and John went up together into the Temple about the ninth hour of the day. And a certain man who had been lame from his birth, was carried every day, and laid at a gate of the Temple, which was called Beautiful, to ask alms (charity that is) of those who went into the Temple. Seeing Peter and John passing, he asked of them an alms. And Peter fixing his eyes on him with John, said, "Look on us."

And he looked on them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give thee in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, rise up and walk." And he took him by his right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately

his feet and ancle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the Temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him, " and they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the Temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him." And as the

lame man who was healed held by Peter and John, the people all ran together into the porch which is called Solomon's.

And when Peter saw this, he said to them, "Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? Or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?" And he then tells them, that it is through faith in the Lord Jesus,—that is, by believing on Him,- that this man hath been made strong. These were his words:" The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our Fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied Him in the presence of
