The first Book of

MOSES, called GENESIS.

CHAP. I. N the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God fald, Let there be light: and there was light.

4 And God faw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day,and the darknefs he called Night: and the evening and the morning were the firit day.

6 And God faid, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament, from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was fo.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven and the evening and the morning were the fecond day.

9 And God fald, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dryland appear and it was fo,

10 And God called the dry-land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God faw that it was good.

11 And God faid, Let the earth bring forth grais, the herb yielding feed, and the fruit-tree yielding fruit after his kind, whofe feed is in it felf, upon the earth: and it was fo.

24 And God faid, Let the earth! bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattel and creeping thing and beaft ofthe earth after his kind: and it was fo.

25 And God made the beaft of the earth after his kind, and catrel after their kind,and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind and God faw that it was good.

26 And God faid, Let us make man in our image, after our likenefs: and let them have dominion over the fish of the fea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cartel, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him male and female created he them.

29 And God faid, Behold, I have given you every heb bearing feed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding feed to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beaft of the earth. and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is lite, I have gi ven every green herb for meat and it was fo.

31 And God faw every thing that hel had made, and behold, it was very good. And the evening and the moriing were the fixth day.

The first fabbath.

CHAP. II.

Genefis,

Has the heavens & the earth were finished, and all the heft of them. 2 And on the feventh day God ended This work which he had made: and he refted on the feventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God bleffed the feventh day, and fanétined it: becaufe that in it he had refted from all his work, which God created and made.

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth, when they were created in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

5 And every plant of the field, he fore it was in the earth,and every herb of the field, before it grew for the LORD God had not caufed it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man.co rill the ground.

But, there went up a mitt from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

7 And the LR God formed man of the-ult of the ground, and breathed into his noitals the breath of life and man became a living foal.

S And the LORD God planted a garden caft-ward in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

2 And out of the ground made the JORD God to grow every tree that is pleafant to the fight, and good for food: the tree of life alfo in the midit of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

10 And a river went out of Eder to water the garden, and from thence it was parted, and became into four beads.

11 The name of the first is Pifon that is it which compaffeth the whole land of Hwilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx-itene.

13 And the name of the fecond river is Gihon: the fame is it that compaffeth the whole land of Ethiopia.

14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth roward the east of Affyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

15 And the LORD God took the man, and pur him into the garden of Eden, to drefs it, and to keep ir.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, faying, Of every tree of the garden thou maveft freely eat:

17 Bur of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not ear of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou fhait furely die.

18 And the LORD God faid, I is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him an help meer

for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beat of the field, and every fowl of the air, and brought them unto Adam to fee what he would call them and whatfoever Adam called every living creature, that was the aame thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all catfel, and to the fowl of the air, and to avery beat of the field: But for Adam

4 And the ferpent faid unto the wo man, Ye fhall not furely die.

5 For God doth know, that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes fhall be opened and ye thall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman faw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be defired to make one wife; the rook; of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave alfo unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked and they fewed fig-leaves together, and made themfelves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day and Adam and his wife hid therafelves from the prefence of the LORD God amongit the crees of the garden.

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and fald unto him, Where art thou?

To And he faid, I heard the voice in the garden and I was afraid, be caufe I was naked; and I bid my felf.

11 And he faid, Who told thee that thou waft naked! Hait thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee, that thou fhouldeft not ear?

12 And the man faid, The woman whom thou gaveft to be with me, the gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the LORD God faid unto the woman. What is this that thou hait done? And the woman faid, The ferpent beguiled me, and I did ear.

14 And the LORD God faid unto the ferpent, Becaufe thou haft done tius, thou art curled above all caitel,

and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly fhalt thou go, and duit thalt thou ear all the days of thy life. 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy feed and her feed it fhall bruife thy bead, and thou shalt bruife his heel.

16 Unto the woman he faid, I will greatly multiply thy forrow and thy Conception in forrow thou shalt bring forth children: and thy defire hall be to thy husband, and he thall Fule over thee.

17 And unto Adam he faid, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife and haft eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, faying, Thou shalt not eat of it: curfed is the ground for thy fake; in forrow fhalt Thou ear of it all the days of thy life.

18 Thorns alfo and thiftles that it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt ear the herb of the field.

19 In the fweat of thy face fhalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wait thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto duit fhalt thou return.

20 And Adam called his wives name Eve, because the was the mother of all living.

21 Unto Adam alfo, and to his wife did the LORD. God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22 And the LORD God faid, Be. hold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil. And now left he put forth his hand, and take alfo of the tree of life, and eat, and live for eyer:

23 Therefore the LORD God fent bim forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground, from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and be placed at the ealt, of the garden of Eden, cherubims, and a flaming. word which turned every way,to keep the way of the tree of life.

CHAP. IV.

6 And the LORD faid unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy Countenance fallen ?

7 If thou doet well, thalt thou not be accepted! and it thou doeft not well, fin lieth at the door. And unto thee fall be his delire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother and it came to pals when

13 And Cain faid unto the LORD, My punishment is greater then I can bear

14 Behold, thou haft driven me out this day from the face of the earth and from thy face fhall I be hid, and I fhall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth, and it fhall come to pafs, that every one that findeth me thall flay me.

15 And the LORD faid unto him, Therefore whofoever flayeth Cain, vengeance fhall be taken on him feven-fold. And the LORD fer a mark upon Cain, left any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the prefence of the LORD, ard dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.

17 And Cain kaw his wife, and the conceived and bare Enoch and he bul'ded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his fon, Enoch.

10 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mchujael and Mehujael begat Methufael: and Methufact begat Lamech.

19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah,and the name of the other Zillah. 20 And Adah bare Jabel; he was

of fuch as have cattel.

24 If Cain fhall be avenged fevenfold, truly Lamech leventy and fevenfold.

2 And Adam knew his wife again, and the bare a fon, and called his name Seth. For God, faid fhe hath appointed me another feed in ftead of Abel, whom Cain flew,

26 And to Seth, to him alfo there was born a fon; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. A 3 CHAP.
