Safe to conduct our spirits home.

HYMN 193, L. M.

The Way to Heaven.

JESUS, my all, to heaven is gone,

whom I fix my hopes upon;
His track I see, and I'll pursue
The narrow way, till him I view.

2 This is the way I long have sought,
And mourned because I found it not;
Till late I heard my Saviour say,-
"Come hither, soul! I am the way."

3 Lo! glad I come, and thou, blest Lamb!
Shalt take me to thee as I am;
My sinful self to thee I give-
Nothing but love shall I receive.

mf 4 Then will I tell to sinners round,
What a dear Saviour I have found;
I'll point to thy redeeming blood,

And say,

"Behold the way to God!"

HYMN 194, S. M.

Christ's Intercession.

Yppear before our God;
ES, the Redeemer's gone,

To sprinkle o'er the flaming throne,
With his atoning blood.

2 No fiery vengeance now,

No burning wrath, comes down;
If justice calls for sinners' blood,
The Saviour shows his own.

3 Before his Father's eye

Our humble suit he moves;
The Father lays his thunder by,
And looks, and smiles, and loves.

mf 4 Now may our joyful tongues
Our Maker's honors sing;

Jesus, the priest, receives our songs,
And bears them to the King.

mp 5 We bow before his face,

mf

And sound his glories high:
Hosanna to the God of grace,
Who lays his thunder by.

6 On earth thy mercy reigns,

And triumphs all above:

But, Lord! how weak our mortal strains,
To speak immortal love!

HYMN 195, L. M.

The Dominion of Christ.

AIL to the Prince of life and peace,
Who holds the keys of death and hell!
The boundless world unseen is his,

And sovereign power becomes him well.
2 In shame and anguish once he died;-
But now he lives for evermore:
Bow down, ye saints! around his seat,
And, all ye angel-bands! adore.

3 Live-live for ever, glorious Lord!
To quell thy foes, and guard thy friends;
While all thy chosen tribes rejoice,
That thy dominion never ends.

4 Worthy thy hand to hold the keys,
Guided by wisdom and by love;
Worthy to rule o'er mortal life,

O'er worlds below, and worlds above.

f" 5 For ever reign, victorious King!

196

Wide through the earth thy naine be known! And call my longing soul to sing

Sublimer anthems near thy throne.

HYMN 196, H. M.

Our High-Priest in Heaven.

mp 1 TH' atoning work is done,

The victim's blood is shed;
And Jesus now is gone

His people's cause to plead :

He stands in heaven, their great High-Priest,

And bears their names upon his breast.

2 No temple made with hands

His place of service is;

In heaven itself he stands,

A heavenly priesthood his :
In him the shadows of the law
Are all fulfilled, and now withdraw.
3 And, though awhile he be
Hid from the eyes of men,
His people look to see

Their great High-Priest again:
In brightest glory he will come,
And take his waiting people home.

HYMN 197, C. M.

Our great High-Priest.

mf 1 COME, let us join our songs of praise

[ocr errors][merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

To our ascended Priest;

He entered heaven, with all our names
Engraven on his breast.

2 Below, he washed our guilt away,
By his atoning blood;

Now he appears before the throne,
And pleads our cause with God.

8 Clothed with our nature still, he know
The weakness of our frame,

And how to shield us from the foes
Whom he himself o'ercame.

4 Nor time, nor distance, e'er shall quench
The fervors of his love;

For us he died in kindness here,
And intercedes above.

5 Oh! may we ne'er forget his grace,
Nor blush to hear his name;

Still may our hearts hold fast his faith,
Our lips his praise proclaim.

HOLY SPIRIT.

HYMN 198, C. M.

Breathing after the Holy Spirit.

COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove!
With all thy quickening powers,

Kindle a flame of sacred love,
In these cold hearts of ours.

mp 2 Look-how we grovel here below, Fond of these trifling toys!

Our souls can neither fly nor go,
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Dear Lord! and shall we ever live,
At this poor dying rate,

Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great?

mf 5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove!
With all thy quickening powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN 199, S. M.

Convicting and sanctifying Influence.

1 COME, holy Spirit! come,

Let thy bright beams arise; Dispel the sorrow from our minds, The darkness from our eyes.

mp 2 Convince us of our sin,

<

Then lead to Jesus' blood;
And, to our wondering view, reveal
The secret love of God.

3 'Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,

To pour fresh life in every part,
And new-create the whole.

4 Revive our drooping faith;

Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our breast the flame Of never-dying love.

HYMN 200, 78.

Influences of the Spirit.

RACIOUS Spirit! Love Divine!
Let thy light within me shine;

[ocr errors]

All my guilty fears remove,
Fill me with thy heavenly love.
2 Speak thy pard'ning grace to me,
Set the burdened sinner free;
Lead me to the Lamb of God,
Wash me in his precious blood.
3 Life and peace to me impart,
Seal salvation on my heart;
Breathe thyself into my breast,-
Earnest of immortal rest.

4 Let me never from thee stray,
Keep me in the narrow way;
Fill my soul with joy divine,
Keep me, Lord! for ever thine.

HYMN 201, L. M.

The Spirit grieved.

1 THE Spirit, like a peaceful dove,

Flies from the realms of noise and strife;
Why should we vex and grieve his love,
Who seals our souls to heavenly life?
2 Tender and kind be all our thoughts,
Through all our lives let mercy run:
So God forgives our numerous faults,
For the dear sake of Christ, his Son.

HYMN 202, H. M.

Pleading the Promise of the Spirit.
THOU that hearést prayer!
Attend our humble cry;

And let thy servants share

Thy blessing from on high!
We plead the promise of thy word;
Grant us thy Holy Spirit, Lord!

2 If earthly parents hear

Their children when they cry;

If they, with love sincere,

Their varied wants supply;

Much more wilt thou thy love display,
And answer when thy children pray.

8 Our heavenly Father, thou;-
We, children of thy grace:
