LESSON XXVII. QUESTIONS.

JESUS Christ has said, "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:" How have these words been mistaken?

Might not a man believe, and yet be very wicked?

If it were only required to believe on Jesus Christ, would it be necessary to lead a good life?

Why do

you think that we must obey Jesus Christ, as well as believe in him?

Suppose Christians were not obliged to lead a good life, what part of the New Testament would be of no use?

What then must we do to obtain eternal life?

Did Jesus Christ endure great sufferings on

earth?

For whose sake?

Ought we not therefore to be deeply thankful to him?

Ought we not to shew our thankfulness to him by doing all he has taught us?

LESSON XXVIII.

THOUGH Jesus Christ sees us all from heaven, we cannot see him, nor will

any one see him until the end of the world. That Christians might not be left alone and desolate, another Comforter has been given to them, to supply the place of Jesus Christ. This Comforter is the Holy Ghost : the Spirit of God which is present in their souls.

You shall now read Jesus Christ's promise of the Comforter, and in the next Lesson it will be shewn how he fulfilled his promise.

From the 14th and 16th Chapters of Saint John's Gospel.

I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for

ever:

Even the Spirit of truth.

It is expedient1 for you that I go away for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

NOTE.

It is expedient for you &c. This is the same as, It is good for you. It was better therefore for the Disciples, that Jesus Christ should go away, and the Comforter be sent to them, than that Jesus Christ should remain with them on earth. This shews how great a blessing the presence of the Holy Ghost is to Christians.

LESSON XXVIII. QUESTIONS.

Where is Jesus Christ now?

Can men see him?

Will they ever see him?

Does he see us?

Would it not be a great comfort to us, if we could see him, and speak to him as the Disciples did?

As we cannot do this, what has Jesus Christ sent to supply his place?

What is the Comforter?

How long did Jesus Christ say the Comforter would abide, or remain, with mankind? What do we learn from Jesus Christ saying, that it was expedient for him to go away, that the Comforter might come to his Disciples?
