you have seen it, as it appeared first in the Christian Guardian, tho' it is now separately printed. You may remember that it was some time in coming out, and very anxiously did our dear creature watch for the appearance of that part of it, which was to contain an account of the concluding scene: but before that appeared, she was taken to join that blessed company that surround the throne, of which no doubt Eliza beth W. made one.

But while she highly esteemed these and a few other select books, she gave a decided preference to the Holy Scriptures; receiving them as the word of God, which was able to make her "wise unto Salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus." She found them to be "profitable for doc trine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness."

One evening on expressing a wish to be read to, my Mother asked her what she should read: to which she replied, the precious Bible, dear mother; you can't do better:' afterwards adding with much earnestness, I dont use that word as some do, but because I feel it is precious, it is all my delight.'

Indeed the sacred oracles possessed her supreme regard. While she was able she made them her daily study, transcribing on cards such texts as she judged suitable to her own case and circumstances, often turning them into prayers. These her pocket companions which were found after her decease I will copy for you at the end of this memoir; because I think they afford a very satisfactory insight into the state of her mind.

I come now in the course of my narration, to a circumstance which truth and christian sincerity forbid me to withhold, although it may occasion some pain to record it.

The great enemy of souls, who is ever intent and on the watch to distress those whom he cannot destroy, was permitted to take advantage of those bodily wants and weaknesses, which were at this time greatly increased, and thereby to draw off her thoughts from those high and heavenly objects, which had before so fully possessed them. For some weeks she said very little on serious subjects, and when read to, did not seem to take that delight in, or receive the same comfort from it, as she had formerly done: yet

when questioned on this point, she uniformly made answer, that her confidence continued firm and unshaken: but it was too evident to us that a change had taken place; that the state of her mind was less lively, less thankful, and consequently less comfortable both to herself and others; and we were to find by painful experience, notwithstanding all her spiritual attainments, that like all others of God's dear children, she while in the body, was "compassed with infirmity."

For some time she seemed insensible to the change; but when afterwards convinced that by too great care and solicitude for the perishing body, her comfort and usefulness had been abridged, and that she had lived far below her privileges as a child of God, and an heir of glory, she was greatly distressed; because she told me that it had been her constant and earnest supplication, that her heart and affections might be more in heaven; and the enemy took occasion hence to suggest, that it was in vain to pray; I endeavoured to say something which might afford consolation and encouragement, and among other things read to her Mr. Newton's Hymn on the impor

tunate widow; but she closed the conversation by saying, this is all very true, but you cannot give me any comfort.'

But the Lord who considers our frame and remembers that we are but dust; and who is faithful to that promise made to his people, that they shall not be tempted above that they are able; but that He will with the temptation make a way to escape, that they may be able to bear it;" was pleased in mercy to hear our united supplications. The Sun of Righteousness arising, dispelled this transient cloud, and we rejoiced to see her mind regaining its former comfortable frame, as the body visibly declined; for, on Friday November 16th. we perceived a considerable change in both these respects.

The thrush once more made its appearance, and her medical attendant on inspection, pronounced it to be of a more unfavourable kind than before. By this she was again reduced, (as she had been several times,) to the necessity of confining herself to liquid nourishment; and having, previously to this seizure, been able for some weeks to take an increased quantity of food, and

that too of the most strengthening and supporting kinds; this sudden change was too great for her emaciated frame to sustain, and we soon perceived her health to be sinking apace.

On Saturday morning, my mother on entering her room, found her exceedingly weak and low, and scarcely able to speak; she asked her if she felt comfortable in her mind, to which the dear creature replied in the affirmative: my mother then said you trust his faithfulness and power,

to save you in the trying hour?" with as much emphasis as she was capable of giving to the words; she answered I do.'

On Sunday she seemed rather revived, and spoke more than she had done for some time. I was desirous of ascertaining the real state of her feelings, in view of that event which appeared to be now fast approaching.

I questioned her upon the subject, and she' assured me she felt no fear nor the least apprehension; adding, I think if I was dying now I should not be in the least alarmed; I have a firm abiding confidence, that it will be well with me; that He will be with me, and grant me a safe
