COLOSSIANS, III, 1. 2. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above and not on things on the earth. VERSE 9,-Seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. Let others stretch their And grasp in all the shore; Of thy grace And I desire no more! THE righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. How long shall vain thoughts lodge within thee! For there is not a word in my tongue, but thou O Lord knowest it altogether. Thou knowest my down sitting and mine uprising, thou knowest my thoughts afar off Search me O God and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. DEUT. IV. 39, 40. Know therefore this day, and consider in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath there is none else. Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments which I commandthee this day, that it may be well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for ever. The Lord hates sin most where it is nearest to him, and the profanation of his solemn ordinances. SINCE the foregoing was written, I have found three little memorandums, which I had overlooked, and as they relate to points of importance, I insert them here. To a friend who asked her how she felt, she said I am very comfortable; it is a steadfast hope a firm foundation, for "The sure foundation of my hope, Is in a Saviour's blood." At the time of the general mourning for Princess Amelia; on something relative to preparation for it being spoken of in her presence, she remarked, 'Well, I hope I have for ever done with mourning; I trust there is a glorious robe prepared for me!' On the stone that Covers her dear remains in Hackney church-yard is placed the following INSCRIPTION: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MARY ANNE WAKEMAN ; Youngest daughter of THOMAS AND LYDIA WAKEMAN, Of this Parish; Who departed this life, in joyful anticipa- GOD and SAVIOUR; The 21st day of November, 1810. AGED 26 YEARS. THE following Thoughts on the Anniversary of the birthdays for Time, and the birthdays for Eternity, of the subject of the foregoing narrative, selected from sweet and valuable manuscipt writings left by her Sister at her decease, are subjoined; and at a future period, should this little volume excite the interest it is hoped ; some farther and more enlarged selections from the same shall be submitted to the perusal of those who shall please to inquire after them. Such inquiries being made will signify to her surviving friends that a further publication of Miss Wakeman's writings will meet with a kind acceptance from the public. OCTOBER 9, 1814. This is the anniversary of my ever dear sister's birthday; the day on which she entered this world of sin and sorrow; but a day for which she will have eternally to bless the great Author of her being; since it was a prelude to that "new birth unto righteousness," which made her "meet to be partaker of the saints in light ;" and without which, existence would have proved a curse, rather than a blessing. All thanks and praise be rendered to "the God of all consolation," that her final happiness is not a matter of doubt or uncertainty.-No-she gave every evidence |
